Even though the taxpayers have clearly shown that they don't want to keep the Astrodome, Judge Emmett is too dense to understand it.  He's going to spend $64,000 to have it pressure washed.  What a dumb***!!! 4951

@Retired_Engineer:

Quit reading the chronicle...it's actually cheaper to keep it as is than to demo the dome. The taxpayers voted down repurposing the astrodome not demoing it. The money for pressure washing the dome came from the auction of memorabilia earlier in the year. While getting rid of the astrodome seems to be the popular choice, that hasn't came up for a vote for county residents. 4951

@Retired_Engineer....I think it's past time to show these elected officials who they actually are supposed to be representing and working for........Let's ALL start by calling, e-mailing, and saturating Judge Emmett's office, and letting him know that is NOT what the voters decided on, and we feel that $64,000 could be put to WAY better use than power washing the Dome......And he feels that it's so dirty and still needs a good cleaning, then put some damn inmates to good use and let them earn their keep.... 4951

@iCarr:  True, we voted not to repurpose it.  Demolishing it WILL cost money.  So, your answer is to let it sit?!  And you're OK with spending money (however earned) keeping it clean?  That doesn't make sense.p.s.  You must read the Chronicle too!

@Retired_Engineer: I agree - what's the purpose of it sitting there, continuing to deteriorate? Isn't it cheaper to demolish and start over than to refurbish it? 4951

@BooBear: I feel the same about Astroworld. I also miss Houston landmark The Shamrock Hilton. I would go there for brunch at least twice a month and Trader Vic's for dinner. Loved spending the weekend there.  Amazing Place ! !BTW; the man ( Glenn McCarthy ) that bought the land for The Shamrock Hilton also bought the land for Astroworld. Both were a  success.  Conrad Hilton bought property in 1955.

@sapphire:  I attended a convention on Turbines at the Shamrock back in the early 80's and stayed there.  It was a great place.The Astrodome was also a great place.  I'd rather see her torn down than to see her gradually deteriorate and start falling apart.

@Retired_Engineer:

Must know all aspects so yes I have been guilty of reading the chronicle.
Until the vote comes before the voters for demolishing the astrodome I don't see any problems trying to maintain it.
Demo is said to cost a min. of 70 mil. so that's at least 70 years of it just sitting there being an eye sore.
I have many fond sentimental memories of the dome. But when the demoing vote comes up I will vote to get rid of it until then let's keep it clean and less of an eye sore. 4951

I don't agree with the 70 mill figure. If that's true they need to shop around the structure has scrap value also. 4951

@iCarr:  I can respect your opinion about the dome, even though your first post was a bit snotty.  As long as taxpayer money is not used to "keep it clean".  Of course, every year that goes by, the cost of "keeping it clean" will grow and eventually it will need structural repairs and/or roofing repairs.  Those will be very expensive. I am also pretty sure that the $70million to demolish it is a number tossed about as propaganda to keep the dome in place.  If I wanted to, I could write specifications to demolish a regular house such that contractor bids would be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Politicians use numbers to support their decisions and directions.

@Retired_Engineer: Do you remember the swimming pool?  It was known to be the largest in the world. Lots and lots of memories.

@sapphire:  Yes, I do.  We were given box lunches one day and most of us went outside to sit by the pool to eat.  I was living over near New Orleans at the time and didn't move here until 1993.  I was sad to find out that it had been demolished.

@BooBear: It's astounding that such a large and prosperous city as Houston has so little in the way of activities and attractions.
Of course, we do have more strip clubs per capita than anywhere else in the world.   4951
