...they just call it Texas Country, Red Dirt Country, Outlaw Country, or the broader range of Americana.  Jason Isbell killing it with his Song of the Year "Cover Me Up".  Been covering this song for a few months now and it gets me every time.

Mainstream Nashville country music has made a huge divergence from where country music started out.  Some of that is good...it's the most listened to genre in the US now...some of that is bad...they've adopted a much more pop sound and artists rarely write their own songs anymore.  Of course there have always been singer/songwriters who would do other writer's songs as well.  Just used to be that most of them came to the game with a pocket full of originals.  Now you're consider original if you have a pocket full of your own. Most of us in the Texas country scene call the product coming out of Nashville "Hick Hop", "Bro Country" or "Pop Country".  Like all music, it's an individual taste thing. 4951

That does sound more county to me. The first seemed almost more folk type but I dont really know much about music. If I like it I listen to it, if I dont I turn it off.
I would listen to the first more than the second. 4951

@BooBear: That's exactly it, ma'am.  What used to be considered "country" is now sort of grouped together with folk, Appalachia, bluegrass, etc.  It's a hodge-podge that falls under "Americana".  "Cover Me Up" won the 2014 Americana song of the year, Isbell won artist of year, and his album "Southeastern" won album of the year.
The point of my original post is that there are some really good options in music to be found today.  There are so many ridiculously talented artists playing in this genre because they don't fit in Nashville's cookie-cutter machine and it's past time that they get a national stage to play on. 4951

@donnatella: You should listen to Sturgill Simpson, Blackberry Smoke, Hayes Carll, Aaron Watson, Wade Bowen....the list is very, very long.  You can hear them on 92.9 and 100.3' HD2 stations.  You can also live stream several Texas country stations.  My favorite is  http://www.texasmix1053.com/ 4951

@ProblemAgain, love that Hayes Carll song.  There's a Music Fog vid from 2010 of him doing it with Bonnie Whitmore and I actually like her voice better.  Nothing against Cary Ann Hearst, I dig her voice, too.  I just like the sing-song Whitmore puts in it a little more.Sturgill Simpson sounding an awful lot like some old Waylon:

He was at Fitzgerald's last week.  Could have seen him for the $10 cover but I had a conflict.  Maybe next time. 4951

I don't think very many non-musicians realize that country and blues are kissin cousins at their roots.  Dave Alvin and a lot of the California country scene like Merle Haggard, Gary Allan, and such have a heavy blues feel to a lot of their music.Paul Thorn runs along those lines but tilts maybe more towards the country in the front with the blues as the foundation.Given the holiday season upon us...this song might be appropriate for many:
