wondering if anyone turns off their pool pumps if going out of town for a few days? I'm worried about the skimmers getting slap full with the pump on and not being able to empty the skimmers. It's been quite windy and they seemingly fill up in a couple days. It's going to be cool. They pool companies I've called said it should run at a minimum of 4 hours. I could shock the hell out of it and set the pump timer to come on for a few hours each day? I'm stressing over this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated apart from the idea of getting a service to come in. TIA 4951

This time of year I doubt it will matter if you leave your pumps off for a few days.  Alternatively you could ask a neighbor to check the filter for you a couple times. 4951

Thanks @ET that's what I had thought as well. Leslie's pool supply said differently. I'd rather come home to a leaf filled pool that has a little algae vs skimmers that were so full that they burn up the pump. The neighbor/friend thing is an option though not the first one. Still hoping for further input on this matter.  4951

Shock and run it before your leave.  With the cooler weather doubt you'll see any algae. On my pool, if the skimmer clogs it pulls from the deep end bottom drains. Works harder but won't burn out the motor/pump   4951

excellent @ET I'll just shock it 24 hours before leaving and have the timers set to run the pump for 4 hours daily. No polaris on at all. Thanks so much..........feeling better about the holidays already! Emoticon  4951

we have an in ground 16 X 32 foot pool & when we go away for the week-end we turn off the pool after shocking it & adding algaecide , never had a problem with it , but we do ask our neighbor to keep an eye out in case kids try to swim in the pool  while we are gone . 4951

Freezing weather is a bigger concern, don't want a cracked pipe or pump basket 4951

@FoFa: I was just going to mention that.
At this time of the year I switch my timer around so that the pump comes on about 1am and runs until 7am so I don't have to worry if the temps dip down a bit.  Remember that it's not the water in the pool that's going to freeze first, it's the water in the exposed pipes.  4951

@ET: All the same, I just let mine run at night all winter long.  Saves me forgetting/worrying about it.

How hard is it to do all the pool stuff yourself? Hubby was traveling a lot when we bought the house and I was out of state. We had the pump burn out while he was gone, guess it was pretty yucky. Since then we've been paying for 2x a week pool service. Just curious because I'm clueless about the whole thing! 4951

@mart I didn't know **** to shinola about it.....but I've learned with intuition and by error and trial. I've been the one to have all responsibilities of pool wench on me! I've got a great guy that does come and do the DE filter clean...but I help him so I learn. One day, I'll not need him anymore. If you want his number I'll gladly pm you. He's actually very reasonable and helpful! 4951
