.LINKEarth is running out of chocolateChocolate deficits, whereby farmers produce less cocoa than the world eats, are becoming the norm. Already, we are in the midst of what could be the longest streak of consecutive chocolate deficits in more than 50 years. It also looks like deficits aren't just carrying over from year-to-year—the industry expects them to grow. Last year, the world ate roughly 70,000 metric tons more cocoa than it produced. By 2020, the two chocolate-makers warn that that number could swell to 1 million metric tons, a more than 14-fold increase; by 2030, they think the deficit could reach 2 million metric tons. 4951

Not to mention, the number one area to export cocoa is West Africa where the ebola crisis is. So the world will be forced to try and keep up with demand by getting it from secondary souces. And the supply is just not there. Something like 75% of the world's cocoa comes from West Africa. 4951

Sounds like a good excuse for Monsanto to make genetically engineered cocoa beans.

If chocolate companies had paid fair prices for the cocoa, and passed that onto consumers, this might not be such an issue. But cocoa farmers are paid slave wages (and are often treated as slaves, adults and children alike) because consumers demand cheap chocolate. Meanwhile many of them have never even tasted chocolate and have no idea what they are farming. This video is very eye-opening.

@Fofa: Feel free to embed this. I tried it once, but I have no clue.

Stay away from gmo! I feel this is just a way to increase the costs with high demands. Just like the recent scare on shortage of velveeta. Anyone else notice the $2 increase after the announcement ? Now no one is buying because it's too expensive!

There will be farms popping up all over the world to cash in on the new gold ! 4951

@angiekaye: Most commercial chocolate already contains GMO beet sugar and/or GMO corn syrup and/or GMO soy lecithin and milk from cows fed GMO corn.GMO's are practically inescapable in the standard American diet (SAD). Unless you buy organic or non-GMO project certified, you can almost guarantee that any processed food and conventionally grown food has GMO's, pesticides, herbicides, or other dangerous chemicals. Ingredients that are banned in European countries are dumped into our foods here, and even sometimes promoted as being beneficial.Sadly, most of us cannot afford better or do not know better, or even uncontrollably crave the SAD way of eating.

@angiekaye: No one is buying it because (1) it is GROSS and (2) for those that can stomach it, they don't need 5 lbs. at a time.  There aren't enough Rotel tomatoes in the world to cover up the grossness of that crap.  4951

@donnatella: Since you put it that way, I make an awesome spicy cheese dip that you simply MUST try. It goes great with chocolate milk bubbles. Hey, two shortages at one meetup!

@Mahm:

Well-said and true & most of the population is completely unaware. I can't afford to buy organic everything, but there's a couple items that I won't skimp on. For the most part, I just read labels & do my best... Simply can't avoid it all. And ofcourse, I do give into my cravings every so often Emoticon. 4951

Time to start hoarding all the candy we can.  Can probably make a fortune if chocolate ever runs out. 4951
