Would any of you homeowners happen to know the cost to replace or change out an entire electrical panel? If so, can you refer someone to me please, I am looking to change mines out this year? My entire place is electrical and a few years ago I replaced my heater and sometimes the breaker trips causing me to have to turn my unit off then flip the breaker before cutting my heater back on. My air conditioner man told me my unit is too new and has more amps than this panel can support.

Thanks in advance! Emoticon 4951

We used Cruz Electric in Humble for a similar project several years ago.  We were please with the job.  As the weather is changing, I suggest that you don't put this project off for too long. 4951

Couple of hundred. Make sure to go with a brand name like GE, Square D, Cutler hammer. Stay away from the cheapie brands. My personal suggestion is to go with a min of 200 amp for a home. I have a couple of 200 amp ones I installed for my home. One for the house and another for my shop. I also like to have at least 10 percent spares for future use.Be sure to get quality circuit breakers, I also suggest a good decent ground. I have a 10 foot long 3/4 inch copper ground rod driven in the ground that I used to replace the pencil sized one that was in here before me. I had a lightning strike not long ago, I lost a lot of electronics had some tripped breakers but I am convinced the ground did its job.I did my own work dont know what an electrician would charge. I replaced the entire panel for the house, and added a 200 amp panel for my shop and finished it all up in about 3 hours. (Not the wiring in the shop, just the panel and breakers. I had to install new, wiring took up another day as I had numerous 220v runs to make for air compressors, table saw, planer etc. My total cost was under 300 dollars. I bought everything at City Electric over on 1960.   4951

@Ray: That sounds a little low Ray. The breaker panel and breakers can cost that much and depending on how long it takes, the cost of an electrician can be fairly expensive.

@Ray, wow, I'm sick to my stomach.  We had to do this right after buying the house, I wasn't here and hubby was traveling so we just bit the bullet.  $3500, I think we overpaid, and they may have done a few other things that came up on the inspection.  They told us they upgraded the parts, I don't understand any of it. Yikes! 4951

Ray did his own work. I think that's why it didn't cost more than a couple hundred but 3500 sounds outrageous. 4951

Yes let me clarify.I did my own work. All of it.My cost was just for materials. After 25 years of installing selling and repairing commercial elevators, and electrical panel is a piece of cake for me. Cant see hiring anyone to do this..... 4951

$800 11 years ago, for an external one, 125 Amp service.1 floor 2,000 Sq. Ft. home.It does make sense to get one that uses common breakers. Our old one had some off brand breakers and we had to live without A/C for a week until I could track a new breaker down, obtain it and replace it.It's nice to just go to Home Depot/Lowes and pick up a breaker if one goes out. 4951

@FoFa: So you think I may need a new breaker instead of the panel which looks new to begin with? Actually ,the entire panel looks new. 4951

Panel Update:

My cousin who is a master plumber just informed me that I need a new breaker not panel. He said the panel is new, he could tell that when he replaced my water heater a year ago. He said he can change out the breaker no problem. He also reminded me that my house was aluminum wiring and NOT copper, which he would recommend changing out but its going to be costly and I will need to hire an electrician because it will need to be inspected and may have to have permits pulled. 4951
