Hi all,We live in a mid 80's house with the original windows.  Has anyone replaced their windows and found it really saved in heating/cooling and made the house significantly more comfortable.  Was it a horribly inconvenient experience and expensive?  Our windows are ugly, many don't operate properly, so I don't open them. We've had Anderson wood windows in one home, vinyl windows on another.  Definitely don't want wood.  I hear ads all the time, but don't know what kind is best for this area.Just thinking about it, we don't want to put too much into the house that we won't get back.  I doubt we'll be here more than 5 years.    4951

We did all the homework and my recommendaiton is to go to  Gulf Coast windows, honest, know their stuff, get vinyl, they are very energy efficient. 4951

windows world.com hands down.Replaced all 36 windows in my home. In and out in 2 days. Great job, the aftereffects;Immediate electrical cost savings. Light bills typicall 400 dollars (4200 sq foot 2 story with 2 units) and since replacement never went over 200Quiet. Used to be able to hear cars go by in front. Nothing nowno more hot an cold spots. constant temps throughout.this company had the best price on any other contractors by 40%. Its a coonass company out of louisiana and they are one of the largest around. Been in business a long time and have done HUNDREDS of homes in our area alone. I am just a happy customer, no affiliation. 4951

@Ray: Do you mind me asking how many windows and what was your final price?  We are looking into it as well.

Wow, lots to think about.  That's a big savings, plus the comfort thing.  This house feels hot when it's hot and very cold today.  Definitely have to weigh the overall cost thing vs. what we'd get back on resale, probably not much. We're about 90% done with our kitchen, which is a huge improvement and I felt had to be done, even if just for my happiness.  We've replaced all the original nasty toilets, yuk! Need to do some updates in secondary bathrooms, still have original faucets, sinks, etc.  We've done all the work in the kitchen ourselves except for the countertop.     I was looking at Window World and Gulf Coast so far, good to hear positive recommendations about them.    4951

@Nurse3: $8400 cash. Half down up front, the rest in full upon completion. We took 10 references in our neighborhood an  and met with all the homeowners. Got great reviews and decided to take the plunge. Best thing I ever did for this house next to replacing the ac's with newer more efficient units....

there are only 3 reasons why I would replace all my window.1. I win the multi million dollar lotto. 2. I decide to retire and stay living in the house - and that's not happening here3. I pay off my house, and have nothing else to spend money on,, see #1 4951
