I have seen quite a few places around with "Now Hiring" and "Help Wanted" signs posted.  It might help to just get something to get $$$ flowing in.  You can continue to look for something better, more like what you want, but at least you will be out there working.  Potential employees are much more attractive if they are already employeed somewhere, anywhere.  4951

@mattem....I'm not trying to be intrusive here, but if you have a job, why didn't you pay the electric bill?....Or at least set something up with your electric provider if you knew that you weren't going to be able to afford the entire amount........Most companies WILL work with peeps before having to totally shut off all power.....  ....But they can't help you if you don't call first and arrange some sort of assistance.... 4951

I wish I knew the local agencies that could potentially help, but I don't.

I would agree with Donnatella though - it's better to take something, ANYTHING, to at least just keep on top of bills and stuff, until something in his field comes along. My husband is a blue collar worker and we moved here from PA bc of the year-round work available for him in the construction industry. I have the white collar "career" job and it really sucked uprooting our whole family and moving away from friends and a support system for his work, but to have him working versus collecting unemployment (60% pay) 3-4 months out of the year due to bad weather is priceless.

I hate to have little sympathy for those unemployed down here - I know there could be a lot of other issues involved - medical limitations, childcare limitations... but there are jobs around here to be had.

And I have been laid off in the past, so I have been in your shoes dealing with the loss of an income.

Is there maybe a pro bono group (like through a Chamber of Commerce or Business Association) who can help look at your bills and other services available so that you can get food stamps or food donations to free up money to pay utilities? Assuming you have all of these... Can you cut cell phone bills down to a basic plan; cut cable; call your credit cards and ask for a hardship plan; call the utility copmanies and tell them the same.

Good luck to you.. I do feel your pain. 4951

Because right now my income wasn't enough. It's a long story of what happened but also I never got the disconnect notice in the mail. They said they sent it and I never got it. This has never happened to me before. I am ashamed and embarrassed for it. Have to explain this to my kids and it's a horrible feeling. 4951

Also, what herron said... if you're too ashamed to call, you have to get over that. But people can't help you if you don't reach out to them, hence why I also suggested calling the bill companies and letting them know. 4951

@ctl74:

He now has a new job just waiting to get paid. I'm not too ashamed to call at all. We thought we had some assistance and it fell through, so today I was going to have time to call and make an arrangement . At my job I never have time to be on the phone. Im not making excuses but just trying to explain what happened. 4951

No, no - I know you're not making excuses! I totally know how hard it can be - and I tend to be one that lets myself go into denial for a couple of days before realizing I have to hit it head-on!

Definitely call the electric company and tell them the situation. (Can I ask who you have - bc I have had more issues with Direct Energy and their billing / website, so I wouldn't be too surprised that you didn't get a shut-off notice.) If they see you are making an effort, I would hope they would be willing to set something up - even if it's a direct withdrawal on pay day.

Since you have access to the internet - switch your statements to online / email so that you can stay on top of them. I also write out our bills, due dates and payments due, on a pad of paper. As DH gets paid weekly, I pull out the pad and make sure I'm paying the bills due for the upcoming week on pay day. Or else, life will get in the way and I will forget! 4951

The good news is, for almost every business, payday is just a few days away.  Could you perhaps pull a cash advance off of a credit card or consider a small payday loan that will get you by the next few days?  Is there something you can pawn for a week or so....a computer, a TV, a musical instrument, jewelry or something?  Those would be quicker fixes that getting signed up and into a system for assistance.

Temporary rough times can happen to anyone and it's nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about.
