So I went to the doctor today because it hurts to breathe. Every time I inhale, I get a pain right underneath my sternum. The doctor said it's because of acid build up (from a different issue that I have) and I should take naproxen or ibuprofen to help with the pain along with Nexium and a liquid antacid for the rest of it. I really would rather not take anything that's considered an NSAID because of the adverse affects that they have. I'm already prone to ulcers and don't want to help that along at all. What other pain meds work well, but won't make my situation worse? Any suggestions? 4951

I don't think ibuprofen would really help very much for that kind of pain. If you want to stay away from NSAIDs, start with Tylenol. I take prilocet daily because I get the most horrid acid reflux while pregnant. Also being pregnant...Tylenol is the only thing I can take. 4951

Ibuprofen can cause ulcers. Any type of pain med is bad for your G.I. tract. Acid reflux and Costochondritis seem to go hand in hand. Pregnancy gave me a little bit of Costo but I just deal with it bc I don't like to take medicine pperiod. Every medicine causes some type of damage to your body. 4951

@Ashley87:

You're brave! Just drinking a few sips of water makes mine so bad i'll puke if I haven't taken my prilocet in a couple days. There's no way I would ever sleep if I didn't take it daily! 4951

I think I'll try an extra strength Tylenol and see if that helps. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm supposed to go see a naturopathic doctor next month, so I really just need to find something until I can get a more natural remedy. I really hate taking pills. 4951

My reflux went away when I stopped drinking coffee and eating dairy products. 4951

I really think I have a high tolerance to pain. I had a 50lb deer head fall off the wall of a second story house, and it landed on my head, and i was forced to take ibuprofen for swelling. Yeah my head hurt like hell, but pain isn't forever, so I could've handled it. I had to get 12 staples. My Hubby turned green and had to leave the room lol. ..Labor contractions, with my first, weren't near as bad as I thought they would be either. 4951

@Odin:
You're trying to kill me aren't you? Coffee and cheese?! No way.

Actually, it may be worth a shot. I'm not supposed to have fried or spicy foods. At one point I was also told to stay away from potatoes, white bread and pasta, although I'm not sure if that's still applicable or not.

@bp2018:
Coffee is a heartburn guarantee!!
Added: after a couple of days of OTC acid reflux meds...you should start feeling better. Hope things get sorted out. 4951

I'm sorry Emoticon If you do finally snap, I'm pretty sure that's the best defense anybody could have. Who would convict somebody who can't have coffee or cheese? 4951

@bp2018: Not pain med, BUT I looked it up and Ginger tea is said to be one of the best things to help with acid.  Also, juice from the aloe vera plant. Avoid laying down right after eating.Also:Fermented vegetablesChutneys Cultured dairy, such as yoghurt, kefir, and sour cream Fish, such as mackerel and Swedish gravlaxRaw Apple Cider Vinegar, Baking soda, Slippery Elm, Folic Acid
