When this argument was raging last year, I pointed out that every person working on Thanksgiving...or any other holiday for that matter...chose to be employed willingly and that many of them were actually counting on the extra pay from overtime.Pretty simple to me.  If your job requires you to work weekends and holidays and you're not good with that, find a different job.  If you're not qualified for anything else, take advantage of living in this most wonderful of Internet ages to get an education in a field that is looking for workers...and find a different job. When I was in the military I had to work more than a few weekends and a whole bunch of holidays.  There was no extra pay and no calling in sick.  It was part of the job and I knew that going in and every time I re-enlisted.  Eventually I got tired of it, got educated, and found a different job.  4951

I spent 6 years working every single holiday. Why, because people ***** about having to work them but have no problem ordering things for that holiday which causes people to have to work. Or wanting to know what store is open because you forgot to buy something, or you need gas for your car. I didnt see my kids on mothers day for years because I was in the middle of 30 hr. Shifts, Didnt spend. Valentine's day with my husband and missed Christmas Eve with my extended family. For years. You do what you have to do and you do your job. Its simple.

The world doesnt stop for a holiday with a questionable beginning. 4951

some people don't have a choice where they work, some just need to work. If everybody took the holidays off nothing would get done and then the people will be complaining nobody is at work.In my job we work 24/7, on scheduled shifts. I have worked liked this since 1996. People whine and cry for days off. Big deal,,, to me a holiday is a time work, I get more money on holidays. I have missed weddings, football games, other special events. To me holidays are a nice time, but 99% of the time, its over within a few hours. so the rest of the day nothing is going on. Where I work, people traveling international usually don't celebrate American Holidays, except for New Years.Think about that.. Christmas,,, what 1 hour for presents, 1 hour for dinner and talk,, the rest of the time is just hanging out, cleaning up. Christmas eve, is usually at church for 1 hour.4th of July,,, 1 hour worth of fireworks for the kids,, maybe a b-b-qThanks giving... 6 hours of work for 1 hour of dinner,,, what really happens on thanksgivingEaster - 1 hour church, 1 hour hunting eggs, and eating.... rest cleaning upValentines day,, is not a holiday,,, its a Hallmark card day,,, where a guy buys tons of junk and its over the next day.Presidents day or MLK day,, what kind of family holiday is that... its just a day off.Columbus day,,, which most of the time people don't even know what day it is.New Years,, that's about 3 hours of partying, then people go home.the 4 true days are Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and 4th of July,, those are the days to spend with family,, maybe New yearsI'm not wanting to sound like a scrooge,, but if you look a the actual time you do things, "with the family" its not really any different from a normal day. I am all for holidays and spending with family,, but why do people complain about holidays, when you can do the same thing on another day off. 4951

Bah humbug, I'd just assume have a job that I had to be at work on Thanksgiving. We always spend Thanksgiving with my MIL. Her house gives me the heebeejeebies it's so gross. Add to this we are driving this year (12-13 ) for hours.  Leaving Tuesday night to arrive early Wed Morning. In a perfect world I could just go to an secluded exotic resort in the tropics from Thanksgiving until Dec 30th That would be Ideal. With My Hub of course...he can show up after HEgoes to see his Mom Emoticon  4951

So at the risk of beating a dead horse, here's my rant on this very topic from FB last year:I'm so tired of people *****ing about <insert retail store name> being open on Thanksgiving at <insert time prior to your sacred hour>. As far as my memory goes back, gas stations have been open all day on Thanksgiving, as have restaurants, and movie theaters, and hospitals, police stations, fire stations, tv stations, radio stations. Airplanes fly, trains run, buses are on-schedule. Your electricity is on, natural gas, water, sewer, your ever-so-precious cable/satellite/Internet. None work by themselves, all are monitored and maintained by real live human beings. The parade that you love to watch so much is followed by entire crews of paid workers cleaning up the mess. And then there's the NFL game times 3. Team support staff, TV crew, event staff, vendors, transportation, parking attendants, etc. I don't lack sympathy for the retail workers that had to be in early or late. I understand that it sucks. I'm also not going to eviscerate shoppers for wanting to get a deal. Not everyone has a familiy event that they could or would want to attend. Maybe the only thing in their life that they have to be thankful for is saving $20 on that new thing they are wanting. Whatever the reasons, the causes, and effects can we please stop pretending that we've killed some sort of sacred cow? Happy Holidays. 4951

So here's my take- back in the old days I worked retail- got me through college and beyond when I couldn't get a Job in my field. We were closed Thanksgiving and Christmas- open every other holiday closed late on T Day opened crack of dawn Black Fri and stayed open late Christmas Eve- all hands on deck- long hours - nastiest customers on the planet. I hated it but I needed the job. Missed a lot of family stuff and when I was there I was too tired to enjoy. So sad- too bad it was what it was. BUT I absolutely 100% refuse to eat out or shop on certain holidays- just the way I am- way too many cranky nasty people and I feel bad for the tired overworked employees. So on Thanksgiving weekend you won't see me within 10 miles of a mall. Actually I don't go to the mall at all during Christmas! Dh and I actually have a bit of a tradition- if we're not hosting a dinner we do a home project. My dd's inlaws are hosting us this year so hubby and I are installing a wood floor in what's going to be a guest bedroom. In the past we've done more wood floors, tile floors and a kitchen counter top.
