I went to use my Dell desktop this morning and it did nothing.  I called Dell support and we did some troubleshooting over the phone.  I thought it might be the power supply but he's pretty sure it's the motherboard.  My warranty expires TOMORROW!  Since I reported it today, it's covered.  They will send someone out Tuesday to install a new motherboard!  I'll call tomorrow to see if I can extend the warranty.Normally, I don't pay for extended warranties.  Do you normally buy extended warranties on electronic devices? 4951

For laptops I do.  I get the accidental damage and drop warranty.  I'm a klutz so it makes good sense for me. 4951

I have used extended warranties on computers before. I have had bad luck with them and one time my laptop at the time kept doing weird things and they actually gave me a new one at Best Buy.  A warranty doesn't cover viruses or backing up your data but any parts broken will be replaced if they can't be fixed. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: if you pay for the devise with certain credit cards, the warranty is automatically extended. the extended warranty you pay for is usually a poor choice. if it wasn't, they wouldn't offer it

@ProblemAgain:  I'll have to check on that but I don't think mine does.

Nope! I am my own PC guru. I tend to stay away from micr-PC formats and go with my own build, and laptops for the wife.

Thus far , all pc's that I've built have lasted 6 to 10 years before I decide to upgrade. 4951

@fcabanski:  The original warranty was free.  I've contacted Dell to see what an extended warranty will cost.    If it's more than $60, I'll take my chances. It IS nice that they send a repairman to your house to do the work.

make a note as to the brand and model number of the motherboard so you can do a search for the cost of a replacement. often the trouble with a machine repeats itself because that is the weak point of the system. it might be worth having a replacement in the closet if you plan on keeping the computer for a long time because the cost of some parts like motherboards and memory begins at a high point and then drops off for a period of time until they get old enough to start becoming scarce and then they rise again and in some cases pass the cost that they were when they were a new product 4951
