Because I'm taking a six week course of two antibiotics, I am concerned about getting "antibiotic diarrhea".  The antibiotics kill bad bacteria, but can also kill the good bacteria in your gut.  I've been looking up things that help support the intestinal tract with good bacteria (probiotics).  I've got several types of yogurt (I've been eating that for several years), but also got some cultured buttermilk.  My wife also found some non-fat milk kefir, which is like a liquid yogurt and tastes a lot like buttermilk. I like it and it's loaded with a variety of probiotics.   I also understand most fermented foods have probiotic bacteria, but I can't seem to find much.Anybody have any other recommendations for good probiotic foods/drinks? 4951

@Retired_Engineer:

Kefir comes in different flavors. I know I've found the strawberry one at HEB. Good stuff and good for you! 4951

Kombucha is also really good, although it can be an inquired taste.

Water Kefir also works pretty well. 4951

Here's a link to a recipe for homemade probiotic lemonade as well. It's super easy to make, but does take a few days to ferment.

Just buy the probiotic pills.  My sister got C diff because the antibiotic killed the good bacteria along with the bad.  Whenever she is on antibiotics, she takes the probiotic pills which you can get at CVS. 4951

I second the Kombucha which comes in different flavors. But yes, I believe fermented foods like sauerkraut contain them as well. And I love Kefir. You may have already read this, but you should have the probiotic drink or pills at least 2 hours before or after a dose of antibiotic. Otherwise the antibiotic will cancel out the good effects. Good luck with everything and get well soon! 4951

Homemade kraut has probiotics. Most store bought has been sterilized and is no longer active.  JJ 4951

Never had luck with probiotics, at least for IBS-d.How ever taking a shot of Aloe Vera GEL (not whole leaf) twice a day, it seems to help (not fix). 4951

Yes!!!! I can't believe the millions of Americans eating billions on shelf pharmacy probiotics....your doing nothing but swallowing dead bacteria. Use only a brand like above that you can get only refridgerated with billions of those helpful live bacteria. Ordering online is dangerouse because you don't know if the company kept it cold enough in delivery. Other than a little tummy gurggle gas the first day or 2 you should have no side effects, the real stuff usually doesn't upset the system. 4951

Kombucha

@Okiedokie:  Thank you for the offer, but I can't have anything with caffeine.  It causes me to have atrial fibrillations.
