Actually common core is just standards, where the controversy comes in is aligned curriculum with an indoctrinated agenda that slips through the cracks. That is why some say whats the big deal while others are ready to knock their school into the next world over whats in the work their particular school sent home. I don't think a government ran school program is EVER GOOD. To easy to brainwash what they want not whats good for the kids. Plus Government fails at everything it touches. There is some common core aligned stuff in my kids time4learning program, I just read over everything and remove what I dont like(one of the homeschool perks..lol) but what sams is doing is exactly what all stores are doing ,,,if they can get something labeled common core aligned they can make extra money. After hitting our kids over the head 2 years with investigations math and frustrating the heck out of them I found out Humble ISD is removing it but yet the young kids exposed to it are struggling like crazy to get over what that stuff did to their brains and self esteem....Its a crying shame our schools have turned into a business at our kids expense....:-( 4951

Does anyone here home school?  I have worked in higher education (college) and am interested in home schooling.  We are having a baby in December, so we have lots of time to prepare, but I would be interested in speaking with parents who are doing it now! 4951

I homeschool. It's fun and really not that difficult. Just look over home school sites and when your child is a toddler join a group like heart and you will get all the info you need. 4951

Congratulations! I'm assuming this is your first. Homeschooling is such a privilege, and something I never thought I would have an opportunity to do. I envy the time that you have to prepare. The beauty of starting with a newborn is that the idea of schooling them starts right away. I was so excited to teach my first child everything. When I brought her home, I took her from room to room and told her what everything was. I would read books to her every night. Then my 1st husband got laid off when she was 6 months old and I went back to work. After a year of him not even trying to find another job, I decided that I could handle being a single mom. I had started teaching her baby signs at 12 months old and I would spend every weekend with my then 21 month old teaching her the alphabet and other concepts. For her 2nd Christmas, I bought her all toys with no batteries: blocks and wooden train set, etc. She was such a calm and creative child. By the time I remarried and had 2 more, I lost my zeal. I wish I had not allowed the stress of my 2nd marriage to steal my joy and my determination to teach my children. Don't get me wrong, they are bright, but just haven't had the same attention to their education that their sister had. More than a year after I married my 3rd husband, and already pregnant with my 4th, we had been discussing home schooling here and there. One day, he made the decision that it was something he wanted me to do. I thought I would wait until the following school year, but my children had been so ill, catching everything from their classmates in their new school, that the principal was threatening to hold them back due to attendance. Two high-performing, straight A students who both qualified for the gifted program... held back for attendance. So, we made the decision to withdraw them right after Spring Break.

There are days that I know they are learning concepts way ahead of schedule. There are days they THINK they want to learn advanced concepts and then get frustrated. There are days when we want to take it easy because someone is sick (very rare since they aren't exposed to classmates). But most days, here lately, with new baby #4, I feel like we will never get into a good routine. There are so many ideas out there on Pinterest and blogs about how to organize and build stations. I just get interrupted about a minute after I sit down to look at this stuff. If you use the time you have now to do all the research, you'll do great. And there are lots of moms in the community who will answer your questions along the way.

Good luck to you. Keep us posted about your beautiful Christmas present. 4951

@Mahm: Some days I really wish homeschooling was an option for us.  Then I help her with homework and realize there is no way.

@BJByrd: Do you know of any meetings or get togethers that they do?  I would love to go sit in on one and get some info. All the women in my family have worked in education in some capacity; when we were visiting in NY earlier this month something came on the news about schooling and common core.  My husband opened up the conversation and mentioned home schooling and I thought my parents were going to eat him, how opposed to it they were.  They made all the stereotypical (ignorant) reasons against it so we kind of just let it go.  I know our families are going to be the biggest opponent; they are so indoctrinated in "the system" and believe whatever they hear on the news.  For some reason they believe teachers are more qualified to teach than we are; I have two BA degrees and an MS degree (that I completed in 9 months while working full time) I have taught at a state college in NY as well as at a Federal Service Academy, yet I am apparently not qualified to teach reading and writing...insane.

@Mahm: Thank you for that post, it is very inspiring!  As I mentioned, I know we are going to have a lot of push back from my family, not sure about my husbands.  My mom is a guidance counselor and my sister a social worker, both in schools.  You would think they would see the benefits of home school, but do not.  It is not even worth trying to discuss it with them and I dare not bring it up with them until we are fully prepared (if you even can be).  Your post really put some more confidence in me and your experience with the school has made me remember why we want to do it!
