Arg, I was just reading this.  Not surprising but definitely concerning.  I was wondering Dunkin's family was doing.  Has anyone heard an update on them?  It is completely surprising that they have not come down with symptoms. 4951

Yep they had full gear on and got infected. Yet a bunch of people use ebola as a joke punch line. 4951

As for the family. Nope not a word other than from an out of state nephew claiming racism

@Stealth83: Personally, I think if it can be proven anyone in the family knew of his condition before he came here, they should be charged with negligent homicide if one of the workers die.I was wondering if the hospital really was equipped to deal with something like ebola.

No only 2 or 3 hospitals are and only 20 beds per the CDC website.

I want to know when he bought his ticket.

@Stealth83:

Surely we are better equipped even at local country hospitals vs. the outposts where volunteers are treating ebola victims in Liberia.

He had a round-trip ticket, which was purchased on Sept. 2 from an IATA accredited travel agency in Lagos, Nigeria. It appears his ticket was purchased by a company named Silson Global Business Liberia Ltd. His return flight was scheduled to depart Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) on Oct. 19. The return flight was scheduled for DFW-IAD-BRU-FNA (FNA is Lungi Intl Airport in Freetown, Sierra Leone).

September 4: The New York Times reported that Duncan abruptly quit his job on September 4, a few weeks after his sister visited from the US. He didn't give a reason for resigning, but he'd been trying to get his visa approved since June. He wanted to see his son graduate from high school in Texas in June. Duncan's visa wasn't approved until early September. 4951

I read that Duncan was not going to return back to Liberia.  Also, I read that his so called fiancee bought the tickets for him to come here.  I still think she is an accessory and should be charged.  Have you noticed that the family has been quiet ever since the young nurse got ill?  Why have they not voiced any concerns about that poor nurse who was risking her life to help save Duncan?   4951

@friday1: I hate to break it to you guys, but nurses are generally not prepared for something like this and 99.9% of hospitals aren't either.  I remember we went through personal protective equipment one afternoon in nursing school where we put the gear on and took it off a couple of times.  As soon as we did it  correctly one time we were free to go for the day.  That is the only time I was taught, in a practical, how to done protective gear.  I can tell you all about the theory though. I think people have it in their heads that nurses are extensively trained for this and it's just not so, unless you work routinely with hot viruses for example you work for the CDC or NIH.  I have thought quite a lot about my place of work and how we would handle multiple Ebola cases.  We would be screwed!

I think the cdc will never admit but these cases stem from Duncan's first visit where they released him. That is the breach they speak of. But not a breach. More like a failure of idiots 4951

Honestly, I don't blame the hospital.  I know that is probably an unpopular view, but they were not prepared and had no clue that Ebola would jump the pond.  There are many things that would cause abdominal pain and fever.  (Although, whoever discharged this guy with a 103 degree temp is definitely an idiot!)I think our CDC has failed us from day one and is continuing to do so.1)  When Dunkin was diagnosed:  He should have been removed to a facility that was set up and trained for a hot virus.2)  Anyone who went into that apartment, had contact with the patient or family should have had information on what to do if they develop a fever.  The poor cop that though he might have it had no idea what to do and called his superiors who said to go to the nearest doctor.  WTH??????3)  All the misinformation to calm Americans and decrease a panic mode.  Really guys??  We need to know how the hell to protect ourselves.  4)  The fact that at every turn the CDC Director's initial reaction is to blame the victim.  Really bugs the heck out of me especially when he blamed the poor little nurse that contracted it from caring for Dunkin.Obviously I am a little **** about the handling of this situation from a government agency that is suppose to be trained to handle every scenario, with a known disease, when dealing with outbreaks.  What the hell do we pay these people for if not to go though every scenario and have a plan in place BEFORE something happens? 4951

I clear that that the president and his cronies hate Texas. I bet they had a big laugh when the news broke. Now we are stuck with the bag. No telling what's coming across from the border. 4951

We must close our borders and delegate ONE place for the Ebola people to be treated (preferably Washington, DC). 4951
