I would say water moccasin Has the pit viper head, and dark colorationBut it is a guess 4951

How long is it? Hard to tell from the pic, but it might be a broad banded water snake. Harmless if it is. 4951

Looks like a banded water snake to me. They will flatten their head to look more like a moccasin when they feel threatened. They aren't poisonous but are cranky little bastards & will bite if provoked. 4951

@topcat My house backs to a drainage ditch & woods, so I've encountered every snake texas has to offer, except for rattle snakes! And my idiot boxer has taunted & irritated every one of them. We've been extremely lucky that he hasn't been bitten! 4951

So relieved I haven't seen any of those yet. Just a garden snake once. One of my dogs is a hunter. She spends her days killing lizards and chasing squirrels. She doesn't bother the frogs, thank goodness! 4951
