I had posted on this a while back but can't find it.  Since we've had some newcomers to Kingwood, I thought it was time to update it and repost. Many highways in the Houston area not only have number identifications, but they have been given names as well.  This was very confusing when I first moved here because traffic reports often use the highway names instead of numbers.  Here are the primary ones:Eastex Freeway                              Hwy 59 aka I-69 from downtown north      Southwest Freeway                       Hwy 59 aka I-69 from downtown to SW TexasNorth Freeway                                 I-45 from downtown northGulf Freeway                                    I-45 from downtown south to GalvestonEast Freeway                                   I-10 from downtown to the eastKaty Freeway                                    I-10 from downtown west to KatySouth Freeway                                 Hwy 288Northwest Freeway                         Hwy 290 from the the 610 Loop northwestLa Porte Fwy aka Pasadena Fwy      Hwy 225 from the 610 Loop to La PorteCrosby Freeway                                    Hwy 90 from the 610 Loop to CrosbyI-610 aka The Loop                              The inner circle around the central part of HoustonNote:  Traffic reports may refer to "accident on the East Loop, North-bound".            This means it is on the eastern part of the Loop, north-bound lanes.Next, we have the outer circle around Houston.  Over the years, I have heard it referred to as:     Sam Houston Tollway     Sam Houston Parkway     Hwy 8     The BeltwaySome sections charge tolls and some are free. Finally, the road that is currently under construction and will eventually form most of a third outer loop around the greater Houston area:     Grand Parkway aka Hwy 99The western portion of the Grand Parkway is completed.  Other sections are under construction. Eventually, it will connect with Hwy 59/I-69/Eastex Freeway near New Caney.I hope this helps! 4951

This is great!  I never did know what the traffic reporters were referring to.  I found it all so confusing! 4951

@Stealth83: I have no idea.  I'm usually still asleep for the morning rush hour and don't pay much attention to the afternoon rush hour. I'm a retired old fart!.

@Retired Engineer   Where were you when I moved here and *****ed & moaned & begged for the traffic people to just use numbers instead of the names. It really is confusing to a new comer. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: the beast is the "Baytown East" Freeway which is I-10 eastbound from downtown, which I believe RE referred to as the East freeway.  Traffic on that section of I-10 used to be terrible before they expanded it a few years back.

Back in the 70's, we lived in Pasadena and I worked close to the Galleria. I-10 was the route I took to get to the office and it was a beast back then. 225 & 610 were horrible at rush hour but 10 was the worst leg of the committee. 4951
