I live in Fosters Mill. I have a bird feeder. There is a blue parakeet hanging out with all the sparrows. Seems fine and enjoying life more so than in a cage. See him almost every day. Anyone lose one? Obviously his wings aren't clipped. 4951

Is he tame enough to catch? I captured a cockatiel a few years ago. No one claimed him, but I was able to find him a good home. He won't make it once the weather turns cooler. 4951

I've seen him through my window.  I'm doubtful I could catch him unless alone. But he sits on the feeder with several others. I will watch .... And if he's alone or seems I'm able to catch him I will.  4951

I got a cockatiel like that before..I coaxed him down and brought him in. That night he started knocking on his perch with his beak and saying "come in" and giving out LOUD wolf whistles..I loved that bird and had him for many years. He probably ended up with over 200 words in his vocabulary. 4951

some escaped birds can survive tho the low temperatures in the winter here make it questionable. you can try catching him or her if you know someone with another parakeet. you put the captive one out in a small cage inside a big cage with the door propped open. they are social and want to be around their own kind so the other one will come down and crawl around the other cage till it goes inside. then slowly move up and drop the door. you could even rube goldberg a string arrangement that would drop the door so you don't take the chance of spooking the free one. escaped pet birds are how there have been flocks growing in  places like san francisco, san diego and places in florida 4951

@BooBearThat's awesome! My cockatiel mysteriously  passed away two months ago at the age of 12. Middle age for a cockatiel, since they can live 25 years. I was heartbroken because I had had him since he was 4 months old. Mine had a very small vocabulary, but knew a lot of songs. I loved him doing the wolf whistle....always brightened my day. I don't really approve of birds in cages, he was bought in a weak moment. He lived in a $400 parrot cage.@Shane4Xmas I was able to capture the one in my yard by putting food and water in a spare cage that I had. If he is tame, you should be able to get him to come to you even without a cage by talking and whistling to him. Good luck! 4951

Unfortunately, I think sometimes people just let them go when they are tired of them. 4951

Handsome (his name) had free reign of the house during the day and would go into his cage at night to sleep. I cleaned more bird poop off of my curtains. We never clipped his wings. He died after I had him about 8 years and vet said he was about that old when I found him.

People do just let them go. 4951

@noel: keep them away from kitchens (teflon and other nonstick coatings can be lethal to birds when the pans are heated to a high temperature) and keep them out of drafts. parakeets can live to be about 12, a cocktiel to about 20 or 25 depending. some larger birds like conures can live to about 75 and large parrots have been known to live to be 100

Let's see if he returns. It's only been this week.  If so, maybe someone here has a cage they can loan me.   4951

@ProblemAgainI actually got rid of all my teflon pans when I got him. My vet thinks maybe heart disease. I don't know, it was very strange. I covered up his cage the night before as I had always done, and found him dead in the bottom of his cage in the morning. :-( 4951

Parakeets are very nice pets. So upsetting that he's loose.. Maybe you could try to get him used to you and see if he'll come to you on his own. 4951

I'll try. We've seen him 3 times. Last 3 days. But he's there just for a second with his new gang.  4951

If you do catch him and nobody claims him I'd be happy to add him to my little brood. 4951
