President Barack Obama saluted a pair of United States Marines on Tuesday while holding what appeared to be a styrofoam cup in his saluting hand, a breach of military regulations that won't win him fans among veterans and servicemen.Obama is known for drinking tea, not coffee, when he travels, especially before delivering speeches. His quasi-saluting gesture was an instant embarrassment for the White House, and not because his environmentally taboo drinkware clashed with the green-policy speech he was on his way to deliver at a UN Climate Summit 4951

What disgust me more was that CNN went on to say "The new latte salute" as if it was some new fab or joke!!read more here:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2767220/AWKWARD-Obama-creates-tempest-saluting-US-Marines-styrofoam-tea-cup-hand.html 4951

Kind of funny seeing people get all riled up about Obama saluting with a cup of coffee, you have to admit. There are thousands of things more important in America right now, than having the news be about a poor salute. 4951

@jack1:

Have you served in the military? Probably not with that type of statement. I served for 8 years and this is very disrespectful. I mean if you can't get the salute correct... How hard is it to put down the cup, salute then continue on your way...Smh liberals just don't get it... 4951

@jack1: I served in the armed forces, and this sickens me. Think about it, a salute is the utmost gesture of respect. If nothing else, he should care how this made him look bad in the eyes of not only America, but the world. He doesn't care! His cavalier attitude is shameful and disgusting. He can bow to foreigners, but can't give a proper salute to the military he is commander in chief of? What a disgrace!

@jack1: Yes there are lots of other faults he has shown but this just adds more of his disrespect to this Country.

Dwight Eisenhower didn't return salutes, and he was a former 5 star general.  In fact, no former presidents did until Reagan did it in 81.  Manners indicate that the salute requires the wearing of a uniform. I am not an Obama supporter by any means, but this whole thing is silly.  The president is a civilian.  I don't feel that one gesture caught off guard really indicates someones level of respect. Edit:  I do feel that if you are going to do the salute, do it properly, not half assed. 4951

@ForeCPA90: The problem is not just confined to this issue but other acts this president has done which angers many Americans like bowing to the King of Saudi and you combine all of them people will remember.

@ForeCPA90:  The president is not required to return a salute, but if you are going to do it, do it properly.  I personally hate it when people can not salute properly.  It's laziness. Also, the wearing of a uniform is not a requisite for saluting.  For example, veterans are permitted to salute the flag when in civilian attire.
