Holy cow, I wonder how much that many Irish Wolfhounds eat? Wonder if they will be up for adoption.

Probably don't eat much, if they were neglected. 4951

News showed they had birds and turtles and that the owner was present when SPCA arrived.

How does one live with so many animals, obviously starving and sick? What is wrong with people? 4951

Mental illness is my guess. They think they're actually helping the animals.... 4951

..the story is the man is in his 70s and was a breeder of irish wolfhounds for show. he was diagnosed with colon cancer. he has been undergoing chemo and became unable to care for them the way they should be. this was not hoarding or mental illness but a physical disability that prevented him from being able to attend to them 4951

@topcat: not among breeders. they raise lots to be able to cull and sell the ones who aren't the very epitome of the breed standard and retain those individuals that meet the standards to show, breed and sell.

@ProblemAgain: A reputable breeder would not have let it get to the point of this situation.

the man is in his 70s and became disabled by colon cancer and his treatment for it. yes it was deplorable. but did he have anyone to help him? did he have family to help with the care iof the dogs or was he alone? and breeders work for years to get a particular line. yes, the best outcome would have been something different but he might have been hopeful that he was going to get better and everything in his life would be ok again and he would be able to take care of his dogs. 4951

Horrible situation for all involved.  Perhaps the man should have made a few phone calls to reach out for help with all of the animals on his property before it got to this point.I wish nothing but the best for the owner and ALL of the animals. 4951

when people are in their 70s, often they have no one to reach out to for help. 4951

@ProblemAgain: County officials. SPCA, other breeders?  If not family or friends,  there is ALWAYS someone to reach out to for help.

@ProblemAgain: As a former small-time breeder/handler I was with you until Channel 2 news mentioned something about exotic animals such as snakes etc. being on the property.http://www.click2houston.com/news/houston-spca-over-100-animals-in-poor-conditions-on-santa-fe-property/28033706

I dont care who you are, 72 is a puppy mill..reputable breeders have homes for dogs before they are even conceived. He may be ill, he may have been a BYB or puppy mill, he may have gotten sick and this may have gotten out of hand faster than he thought but I promise he was no reputable breeder...not with 72.Happened to a rottweiler breeder a while back..about 10 years or so, she titled her dogs, she bred them right and had all health certificates and she became very ill VERY ILL, after about a year. someone with one of her pups went to visit and she had FOUR.......FOUR dogs sick and in bad health...that I can see happening....NOT SEVENTY TWO 4951
