I was washing a load of laundry and the washer started smoking and smells like burning rubber. It's a top load GE that is 9 years old. No parts have ever been replaced on it.

Any suggestions? A new belt or new machine?

I have read a little bit on it and it doesn't seem good. Transmission or solenoid or motor. Those sound expensive. 4951

They just don't make stuff the way they used to. Hope you get it fixed or replaced soon. I had a roper w/d that I bought in 1995. They were still going strong in 2010 but I gave them to a needy family who'd lost everything in a fire.  I hope the set I got last that long. I'm trying to be positive! Emoticon 4951

@N+T: . I have had 3 sets of washer/ dryers over the years. I think they make them to break so you need to buy new ones. Check them out at best buy. They've come a long way in the past few years with sweet features you didn't even know u needed. Oh, and sorry I went bat **** crazy on you the other day. I blame it on hormones. I've been a moody lady latelyEmoticon

Our gas dryer died, but the washing machine was still working (but was making strange noises).   They were 21 years old, so we went ahead and replaced both of them.  Machines have way too unnecessary features (to jack up the price).Gas dryers now have a life expectancy of 11-16 years.Washing machines  8-16 years.http://www.mrappliance.com/expert/life-guide/ 4951

Anyone have a top load without an agitator? The new HE models get mixed reviews. Do your clothes get clean without being agitated? 4951

@N+T: I do. And the clothes do get swished around, a lot. I absolutely love mine. It has a sensor that detects exactly how much water is needed for the load that you put in. It also fits king size comforters (no more lugging them to the dry cleaners!) Here's a link to the one I have. And the matching dryer is a dream...

I've called for a repairman for washer/dryer on two separate occassions and it turned out it was minor issues both times. I'd schedule an appointment! 4951

@N+T: We had a high efficiency, top of the line, ultra expensive washing machine without an agitator.  It didn't clean our clothes for shizzle.  We gave it away, and bought a regular, cheaper, somewhat less efficient old-fashion style whirlpool washer and it cleans our clothes.  Our family has a number of athletes and outdoor workers in it, so clothes get dirty and need to be cleaned.  If you never sweat, or don't get your clothes actually dirty, the high efficiency will work fine.  If any sweat or dirt is involved, I wouldn't recommend it.  You really don't save that much in water usage anyway.  JMO, based on my experience.

Well I let my DH read all the comments, mostly negative, about these new washers and he still bought one.
He chose an LG http://www.sears.com/lg-4.3-cu-ft-high-efficiency-top-load/p-02655502000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1
I did tell him we should keep the old agitator one just in case we hate the new one.  We can always try to fix if need be.  4951

something probably got stuck ,and burned the belt. As long as its turning means the motor is good. More than likely the belt got stuck something fell off. Take off the front panel,, might be the back and clean it. with a vacuum cleaner. Look for burn spots. see if anything is loose. 4951

@KTownTexican:
I looked up how to take apart my old GE washer and the belt is on the bottom, under the drum. It would be hard to see if I just remove the front panel. I think. Have to remove the front panel, and drain any water, then turn it on its side and open the bottom. Seems like Kind of a pain. 4951
