Okay, I have a question.  It is a legitimate question, so please don't slam me.  I don't know a lot about football, but is there a morals and/or behaviour clause in their contracts?

I AM NOT CONDONING HIS ACTIONS AT ALL, but wouldn't that fall under his own personal domestic issue, between him, his GF and the police?  Why would that have anything to do with is job of playing football?  I could see if he were deemed a dangerous criminal, charged with murder, etc.   Football players get arrested all the time for D&D, or fighting, but why would this time be different?  4951

I believe that, under the contract the players have with the league, that they are a "representative of the team" and, in a way, an at-will employee.

But I stand corrected!

Side note: Did you see the elevator video on TMZ of him actually hitting the wife, and then the aftermath? It was hard to watch.

@donnatella: I don't think they do - there would be no players in the league! But they can be suspended for 'conduct detrimental' to the league, ie bad publicity.

The NFL has a motto of "Protect the Shield".  Seems that more and more they are cracking down on bad behavior and making it have real-world consequences.  Historically they've either downplayed, ignored, or swept their dirt under the rug.  Ray Lewis...formerly of the same Ravens team...killed a man, fingered his buddies, and still remained an icon in the game.  Michael Irving was busted for coke, hookers, and just generally being a ****** but they turned a blind eye to it.  A lot of people have been jumping on Roger Goodell for having a spine lately.  I think he's doing the right thing by treating the NFL like any corporation would treat its employees.  IMHO...it's about damn time. 4951

If a couple years ago most player contracts contained moral clauses, you better believe that in the wake of the Michael Vick case, almost every athlete will encounter such a clause when signing a deal with a team and/or sponsor.  The clause often gives the team or sponsor the right to terminate the contract and may even call for the return of any signing bonus handed out after the parties sign.  Criminal behavior will undoubtedly bring the clause into effect, and oftentimes, it takes much less for one side to threaten calling it into action.Brian Socolow recently wrote an article in Moves Magazine, titl 4951

@scamp:  That makes sense.  No team wants to be full of players with bad reps that no one likes off the field.  They are no longer marketable and likeable.  Again, the question was to get a better understanding of why some are fired and others aren't, and how those contracts worked.  Yes, the guy is a complete tool and if he hit her/beat her up, she should have shot him.  Absolutely no excuse for hitting a woman like that, especially given the obviously size/strength difference.

Thanks for the info. 4951

I just read the story and saw the video and was about to come here and post a thread. I don't know what to say, TMZ is not playing all the video either, they left out the part where she spat  and hit him first, I saw it on another video......

On the other hand if he was all that bad why did she go and marry him, I would have left him right then. Then too I never spat on a man, yes I have hit one but was never hit back just had all my blows blocked..... I'm not condoning him but to have his entire career taking away over something that happened away from the playing field is just wrong......

One, I would have never married him.
Two, I'd divorce her *** so quick, she think I had punched her again.
Three, don't start none, then there won't be none! Emoticon 4951

@bubbleyes72: I was waiting for a post like this! It's not easy for the abused to walk way from an abuser. It's not as simple as that. (To those of us who have never been in that situation, it does seem cut and dry, though!)

She hit him and spat at him - while she's hardly innocent, it still doesn't warrant him cold clocking her. In the face. He's a lot stronger than she is. 4951
