You do realize no virus can be treated with antibiotics, right? 4951

As a parent...it is concerning. The problem is that it can turn into a very serious situation very quickly. If my daughter starts showing signs of being ill, you better believe we'll be at the dr's office when they open the doors!

I'd rather jump the gun than have my child end up in ICU.

I know a lot of people over react and probably take their kids in when they aren't really sick. But in my world...There is nothing more important to me than the well being of my child. 4951

@BusyMommy: There are anti viral medication now that work very well if used with in first few days of symptoms. They will cut the discomfort down, cut time sick down and help prevent secondary Infections which usually do need antibiotics.

When these heavy viral and bacteria diseases hit, the ones who usually die are not from the virus but from secondary Infections that develop from the virus. This is why many ask for antibiotics. It's not necessary though. If you go in and get treated asap for the original virus you can usually prevent secondary Infections. People without insurance are at higher risk because they play the wait and see game. They don't go in till they realize it's turning into an emergency and won't be turned away. Get a card with next care or hit a cheaper clinic and usually you can get treated for under 100 bucks. If you can't afford that go to the ER. They can not by law at this time(that may change) turn you away for lack of payment. 4951

And please, don't cover your child's illness with Tylenol and decongestants  and send them to school anyway. 4951

So true.  I hate it when people give fever reducer and send their kid to school.  It isn't fair to the child who needs to be at home resting, to the teacher who has to deal with the sick child, or to the other parents/students/staff members who have to deal with the spread of illness.  I don't understand why parents do this.  Isn't parenting your number one responsibility? 4951

@BusyMommy:

A few reasons, one is the parent can't afford or doesn't want to miss work. Another is fear of too many missed days. Also some families have the suck it up we all get sick and life goes on....get to school and deal with it attitude. Well your kid may be tough and handle it but they may spread it to another child who can't and ends up dead. When I had my last fit of meningitis, both the Hospital and My kids doc said she was safe for school as I wasn't contagious. I didn't care, my MIL, canceled all her plans and hubby took a week off with NO PAY and stayed home with her. I had them watch for all signs and check her temp every few hours for 5 days. 3 were school days and the weekend. No way I was just taking the docs word and having that crap spread. It's just not worth a paycheck to put others in possible danger. And just what exactly was she gonna learn that week to stress her more at school while I'm in the hospital, exactly what would be so important in her lesson plans worth a possible spreading.

Sorry, but the "work" excuse is lame.  You should have all the child care arrangements figured out.  If your kid is sick, keep them home.  The school even tells you what is considered sick.  It seems like parents who actually care enough to keep their kids home when they are sick are in the minority. 4951

I wonder how many kids will now come down with this virus after the article yesterday.

I am always fearful when I see these things that then people over react and start demanding their children have these "new" viruses.  Granted this one isn't new but it doesn't have an antibiotic to fight it since it is pretty rare.

Would be nice to know why the increase in the midwest though.
@Stealth83:  Is this just a kids virus or has it hit any of the adult population?  All of these superbugs scare the crap out of me.  I have enough trouble fighting off the usual crap, like a cold or bronchitis, etc.  4951
