I'm in project management and I enjoy working on budgets for projects and ongoing maintenance.  I like working on my personal budget even more.

I always leave a 15% contingency "safety net"  and if it doesnt get used up, your management will love you for bringing the project home under budget. On my personal budget it gets rolled into savings/investments on top of what I already save/invest. 4951

@PedroDePacas: Usually adding a safety net gets the project denied.we're non profit and we have several buisness groups that pay our bills. I do up routine stuff by 10 to 12% though.

@mm4731:

Not in my business it doesn't. Maybe because I work in for-profit business.

You would think any manager in any business would rather add contingency into their plan rather than have to bust their budget and then have to explain why all their projects are over-budget. That would be the last conversation I'd like to have with my management team. 4951

The reality is that projects go over budget.  Safety net acknowledges that on the front end. 4951
