In the Houston Chronicle this morning. Pit Bull owner in California found guilty of second degree murder and could get 24 years to life in prison due to Fatal Mauling death of neighbor who was out for her daily walk. She died from blood loss after being bitten 200 times. This breed is very well known for violent vicious unprovoked attacks. 4951

No more than any other breed. Its the OWNERS that make them mean. They are wonderfull gentle companions in a normal setting. Heck my little weiny dog is a downright mean little bastard. Dont know why, he just is. He is fine with us, just hates other people. 4951

@Ray:
You're wasting your keystrokes. Doddlebug is an anti-pit bull zealot. No rational thought there. 4951

Most of the fatal attacks are from the family owned pit bull. They usually state "but he was so nice and friendly". Sorry, but the owners do NOT make them mean; they are genetically programmed to rip and tear flesh. They are bred to be aggressive fighting dogs. That's what they are. In the mid eighties when it was outlawed in all states they were released into the general population. As they say "bloodlines always tell". Only a fool would have one of these dogs in their households. If you do own one of these dogs or adopt it out and it is involved in a fatal attack you will be doing time for second degree MURDER as the owner in California is now facing (see first comment in this thread).The safety of the general public is more important than someone's opinion who is ignorant on the danger of this breed.  Due to their tremendous jaw power they require special fencing and housing.  There is always the chance of one getting loose and terrorizing their neighborhood. Would you want your child to get off of the school bus and encounter a loose pitbull.  Would you or a member of your family want to encounter one while out enjoying the green belt? 4951

@doddlebug:  I agree.  They are unpredictable and their bite is deadly.  This isn't the first killing by a PB and it won't be the last.

@Ray: When ya'll state the owners make them mean, what do ya'll mean by that? Are you referring to the one's that are trained to fight? Or just the owners mistreat them?We could trade some stories about mean weiny dogs, the one I have now is a lover, not a fighter (killed a few squirrels, but thats it), but I had one that passed away a few yrs ago, he was mean, got some real funny stories about it (my family called it KKK, kitty kat killer), I was concerned about it biting someone, but never mauling anyone.
