Would just like to remind everyone to keep an eye out for kids that are trying to get to school/home. I see two little kids riding their bike to the elementary school (have seen them this entire week) every morning. The oldest looks to be 6-8 years old. Possibly siblings and I've had to creep behind them at about 5-10 mph to avoid hitting them! They're beginners also because they cannot keep steady on the bikes, weaving into traffic. Please be careful when driving past the children! 4951

I am never letting my kids walk or ride their bikes to school (when that day comes) unless I walk, run, or ride with them.. I just don't feel comfortable doing so bc of cars, predators, etc. My Husband is letting his son ride his bike to Middle School, which might be good for him to learn some discipline but still worries me. My step son is now telling us he isn't enjoying riding his bike to school, when he told us he loved it a few days ago. Kind of makes me wonder what happened. He has Autism and has a very difficult time communicating and sometimes gets his stories mixed up. Hope he wasn't one of the kids you witnessed! I doubt it is though since we have practiced with him for two years and he is very good at watching for cars.. 4951

he's probably not liking the heat outside and the fact of being weighed down with a backpack on. 4951

call me overprotected but I am not at all comfortable letting my daughter out of my sight knowing there are sex offenders in the area. 4951

My Husband said he will NEVER let our daughter EVER ride/walk alone. I agree, but aren't boys in danger of predators as well? 4951

@Ashley87: yes they are. I was shocked to find out through a database how close these sex offenders are in our area.

@CBP210: Always be safe and alert but also remember that a sex offender label can be anywhere from indecent exposure by taking a PP in the bushes exposing themselves, or a kid snapp'n a girls bra in highschool all the way to raping a child so sometimes these watch list can make the stats look a little worse than they are because they seldom list the actual offense.

@CBP210:
Of course not, just pointing out how wide spread that label goes on those data sites. 4951

Hmm, yes I was behind those 2 kids yesterday morning as well, and neither child had a helmet on. 4951

I don't know about their parents' work schedule, but I always go with my kids during the first week of school, to drop them off and pick them up, just to make sure they know normal safety measures and so they know who it is acceptable to talk to and who isn't! And whoever lets their kids ride a bike without a helmet is just insane. I don't care how "good" they are at riding it.. You don't know how many dumb drivers are out there. 4951

Are these the same kids I saw the other day biking down Tree Lane? OMG I was completely shocked - boy and girl; age around what you said; the one was so unsteady on her bike she was weaving into traffic. To boot, there are NO sidewalks along that road.  (They did have helmets on, though.) I think these two are way too young to be biking by themselves, regardless of offenders int he area. I would be more worried about them getting hit by a car. 4951

Riding my bike to school was one of the best experiences of my life. I still love riding my bike! I did 20 miles a few nights ago. 4951

@Burnsway: I agree. I hate how the pendulum always swings too far, for every issue. But this one is so disturbing to me. I hate to think that when my son is 18 (only 9 now) he could be caught having consensual sex with his 16 year old girlfriend and be labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life. I don't care what people say, a 16 year old can consent and even initiate!

We were all teenagers once, and we know the things that went through our minds back then.
