So I've decided to spend the night cataloging my books. I really need book shelves because they're all stacked up in nice little piles on the floor of my library. This is gonna be a fun night! So here's my question, should I organize them according to genres, then by author? Or just according to author? Anybody want to help me? Emoticon lol 4951

My library was done by Genre and when I set it up again it will be by Genre.  When I moved to KW a year ago I lost my library. We are going to add on in a year or two and I will get my library back. JJ 4951

I am thinking that's how I will set mine up. It's going to be difficult since many of the books I read can fall into more than one section. I'm sorry you lost your library! My books were taking over the house, so I kinda had no choice but to turn one of our extra rooms into my own little book haven. I still have a long way to go though. Were your shelves built in, or standalone? 4951

I would have to go by author. Unless you were to also alphabetize the genre then author..no..still by author because some books fit more than one genre and they may be by the same author...you cant have them spread out like that.

Author. Definitely. 4951

Unless you have a bunch of shelves to separate by Genre, then Author, I would just go by Author. 4951

I did ours once (before selling most) by author then by title.  Worked in the library at school for years so it kinda rubbed off on me  4951

How do you read?? I tend to find an author I like then read everything they have written or do you find a genre and read as many different authors?? That should tell you how to organize it.

I would still have to alphabetize by author though because I have to have things in lines. Also publishers usually will print all of one author in the same size so that takes the dilemma of trying to arrange by size as well out. 4951

But then you have series that even though the titles may be all over the place alphabetically. ..you still need to keep the series together. When that is the case then if the series had a name, I would use that but if not I would find Something all had in common and name the series myself. 4951

I also primarily use my Kindle now (sorted by Author) but I still have a lot of books.  The only sorting I do is that I keep my genealogy research books on a separate shelf.  Everything else just gets put wherever it will fit.I do have some sets of books that I keep together..... Civil War, "How it Works", Photography, and Basic Household Repair. 4951

@bp2018:
Both, One wall was built in then I added 4-5 stand alone shelves. I organized fiction by 3 Genres. 1) Wife books that I would never read 2) Books I haven't read yet. 3) the rest. Then they were sorted by author. Non-fiction was separated into:1) Religion2) Engineering/Tech 3) Racing4) Catalogs5)How-To and Manuals6)Business7)Lean and Six Sigma stuff (I had so many I had to separate from the business stuff)8)Biographies and Politics9)Economics10) Everything else Edit: Forgot History I have many history books. In addition I had a next up shelf for what I wanted to read next from the non-fiction section. JJ 4951
