Doesn't surprise me, employers are looking (as are prospective employers)on FB. A couple of my friends "tag" me when we play golf, I'm constantly getting on them, if I had a real job (I'm SE), that would get me in trouble as much as we play, even at that, I don't need everybody (a few clients are FB friends) know where I'm at, or what I do, it's ridiculous! 4951

@cador: You can set some parameters where no one can tag you or you can be tagged only if you grant permission to be tagged.  I forgot where I found that, most likely in privacy settings, but I have mine set so no one can tag me - PERIOD!!

I used to have mine set where no one could tag me. When I started dating my DH, he wanted to be able to tag me anytime. So I removed the privacy setting. Now my (grown) cousins will tag me and 48 other people in one post and it's really annoying. I wonder if there is a way to allow only certain people to tag me. 4951

You can set it where all tags sit and wait for your approval before it goes on your timeline. 4951

www.khou.com/story/n ews/local/2014/08/21 /facebook-post-about -ferguson-leads -- As racial tensions continue to flare up in Ferguson, back
home in Houston one woman's Facebook post about the controversy landed
her in the unemployment line. She wrote, "The police need to just start mowing them down with machine guns, purge them," on her personal Facebook page."Very racist," said one man, who didn't want to be identified. "I was highly offended."This
man saw the woman's post online, and he looked into it further. He
learned the woman, KHOU is choosing not to name her, worked at Memorial
Hermann Southeast."It shouldn't be tolerated when you're a
professional," said the man. "A hospital is a place where you're
supposed to have compassion upon people of all races."That
controversial post on Facebook was never truly private. Nothing on
Facebook really is. Within hours, it had been shared multiple times, and
it wasn't long before Memorial Hermann found out about it too. They
took swift action."People were pretty upset about it," said the man.The
woman was laid off. The hospital responded via Twitter tweeting, "a non
nurse employee posted an offensive comment. MH absolutely disagrees
with that post. We have a 107 year history of serving everyone. The
individual is no longer an employee of Memorial Hermann.""Even freedom of speech has its consequences," said the man. It's
something people in the workplace tend to forget. KHOU legal analyst
Gerald Treece says what you tweet, Facebook or say can come at a cost in
the workplace."People have the right of free speech, but employers can fire you for whatever they want in the state of Texas," said Treece. The
woman's post has since been taken down, but the damage already done.
Experts best advice: think twice before you hit 'enter.'

Thanks I worked for MHTW and know they will not tolerate anything offensive from their staff.  We had some nurses & aides 'laid off' because they emailed and texted an offensive, sexual cartoon.  It was on company time and the emails were on the company computer, even though they were done thru their personal email accounts.  The hospital has the right to monitor what is done on their computers and the IT people were monitoring - so the emails got caught. I don't know how the texts were caught unless someone told.  But there were 4 total who were dismissed the very next day.  Doesn't take long at all.   I learned a long, long time ago that there is a time and place for everything & that includes words.  Sometimes you have to think before you type when dealing with social media or anything on the internet.  4951

This was on her personal time on her personal computer.  But it was still shared with others.  Employers do have a right to employ who they want and it does show no matter what, nothing is private.

@Stealth83: Correct!  It might be on personal time and personal equipment, but her name is associated with the company/hospital and what she says & does even on her personal time can reflect back to the employer.  In today's world of instant media, words go around the world instantly, employers cannot afford to have a poor image from an employee who cannot control her/his emotions, thoughts and words.  This very person could assigned an objectionable patient - would that employee be trusted to do the right thing for that patient in a time of crisis?  If something goes wrong during a crisis, could that employees attitude come back to haunt the hospital legally?  Who knows, but they sure don't want to take the chance.

I am not suggesting it is a bad thing, it does however need to be an equal thing.

@Stealth83: Can NEVER be equal.  The employer holds all the cards.  The employee, especially the non-professional employees, need the job.  So, the deck is stacked so that the employer dictates what the employee can and cannot do, even away from the job. But, this is how it was, even before modern technology.  Back then, if you were to say something disparaging about your employer or make some outrageous outcry about something that was important to the employer, and it eventually got back to the boss - he/she could fire you, or make your life miserable so you would quit.  The employer always holds the cards and the employee always has the choice of whether they want to work there or not.
