COMPUTER MODELS CAN LEAD TO HURRICANE HYPE ON INTERNETBy Tim HellerTuesday, August 19, 2014We are now entering what is usually the busiest part of hurricane season. Only two named storms have developed so far this year and that's not unusual. The third hurricane doesn't usually develop until September 9. But if history is any indication of what's ahead, we'll be tracking several tropical waves over the next six weeks. Thanks to the internet, everyone can look at the same computer models we use in the ABC13 Weather Center. And that means anyone can grab a scary screenshot and post it online to generate retweets, likes and page views.On Tuesday, for example, one of the long-range forecast models woke up and suddenly showed a hurricane tracking toward Houston at the end of next week. And almost immediately posts went up on Twitter and Facebook warning that a possible hurricane "could enter the Gulf of Mexico." One tweet from a local government agency went as far as drawing an arrow from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean right toward Houston.Three runs of the GFS forecast model show different output for next Friday. Images from WeatherBell.Truth is, the same model showed no development six hours earlier. And a later run showed the storm moving toward New Orleans. A collection of model runs called "Ensembles" showed the storm tracking toward Florida. Another long range model showed absolutely no development at all.Do we need to watch for possible development in the tropics? Of course! As I constantly remind people, we live along the coast of a warm body of water; hurricanes happen here. We ALWAYS need to prepare. Not every disturbance in the tropics will be a direct threat to the Houston-Galveston area. Furthermore, forecast models are often wrong, especially beyond the first 72 hours. Trust us. We'll let you know when you need to worry. 4951

Someone here at work is leaving today for Puerto Rico and another guy leaves next Thursday for Puerto Rico. Hope they both miss the storm. It looked like it will hit there in the next or two. 4951

Here's my deal- I look at spaghetti models.com every couple of days during hurricane season. I find hurricanes fascinating. When a storm forms I read the updates-when it reaches the Gulf I study and analyze to models and history of other storms( ha- like I know what I'm doing). I prep in April so I'm good to go, if our area is within the cone a week out- I double check water, food and batteries, and keep all cars on full gas. 5 days out I hit Specs, 2 days out I buy my fresh fruit and veggies at 5 in the morning and then watch everyone panic. I absolutely HATE being caught in a crowd that's in a panic- that's why I prep. 4951

@Jpgurl: Having not been through a direct hit by a TS/hurricane yet, I've also heard that having a decent amount of cash with you is a good thing.

Went thru Alicia in 1983, Rita and Ike. Each time you learn from the storm so you can "do it better" next time. 4951

I'm not too terribly worried. I'm pretty well stocked on emergency supplies and will continue to stock up more. Plus we have a generator. The only thing that might be a problem for me is depending on when/if it hits, DH might be stuck at the unit indefinitely. I'm not gonna like him being gone for so long, especially when he's stuck in a place surrounded by inmates Emoticon 4951

@bp2018: You can bring your generator and your booze and come stay with us if that happens.

@donnatella:

Lol I may just have to take you up on your offer. On the bright side, I should have enough alcohol to get us through the majority, if not all, of the chaos nicely buzzed. 4951

Michael was working with a different company during IKE and they supplied their employees that had damage to their homes with a generator. We had a tree fall though our closet. It was nice having AC and they would bring us diesel from the company tanks. 4951

My company gives out generators, too.  Wish I was working for them back then. 4951

Our generator was useless for a few days, when we couldn't find gas.  DH finally loaded up the beast with gas cans and drove to LA.

@Fallon: We did the same thing, only it was to Lufkin. Getting away for a day did wonders for our sanity as well. Emoticon
