so I have this kid,, for the past several years I have known him,, he refused to eat anything other than pizza, plain hamburgers, pasta or chicken sandwiches.I have tried to get him to try and eat other foods,, Now he always said,, "I don't like it, I have tried it before and I don't like it"... of course  I have never seen him try anything. We would go out to eat Mexican food, and he would order a hamburger. I knew eventually this would change,, but he would never do it in front of us.I finally quit taking them out to eat, and wasting them ordering food and not eating it and then waste food.I knew he would go eat with his friends, and what ever they were eating he was chomping down as well. Well the other day, he said he actually "LOVED" quesadillas. And liked chips and salsa. WHAT?!?!?!?!?!I have tried for years to get him to try to eat them at a restaurant, but he was set in his mind he wasn't going to eat.  So when I told him that for years I have tried to get him to try new foods, he refused because he never liked to eat it or even try.... he would only eat the chips and salsawhen I asked him why he never liked them when we went out to eat, and would never try them.his comment ..... "I have always liked quesadillas" 4951

You didn't go wrong anywhere. Sounds just like my munchkin. Just now starting to branch out and try different things. Maybe for some, it takes a while for their palette to mature. 4951

Sounds like my husband. His mother says he was born that way. 4951

Did a  girl offer to split a  quesadilla with him? I used to be like that. Since I have been with my lovely foodie wife @EllaMentry, my food range has changed,  somewhat.   And since quitting smoking, there are even more foods that I have tried and enjoyed. 4951

Sensory issues often go undetected in kids and many times they out grow them but sometimes not. Our mouth is one of those sensory hot spots. Under sensory the food may taste bland and they want too much salt or spices to wake it up some while other times they can have over sensory which the least bit of season could be way too strong. Kids that are picky eaters and seldom want to branch out are sometimes trying to work their own sensory issues out. Texture and size can be an issue also...as a little piece of corn could feel like a golf Ball in their mouth while for some kids they can shove so much in and not feel it till they gag. Many times children are punished for their eating habits that they can't help, causing more issues.  4951

no,, he just is a picky eater,, who refuses to try anything because his daddy is like that, he would refuse to eat anything,, his mom told me stories how they would go to a nice steak or seafood place to eat,, and daddy would refuse to try to eat anything,, they would leave and stop at a fast food on the way home... so growing up he followed the way his daddy ate.I came along, and would try anything,, because I was taught to try anything. 4951

I just let mine eat what they like. One has started trying everything, and the other is coming around more slowly. There are bigger fish to fry (pun intended) when raising kids then worrying about their eating habits. 4951

@topcat: we have to get our kids to start challenging each other to try foods,,  I think you tell your kid to tell my kid to dare them to eat sushi next,, or is that to extreme?

Why would you bang your head against a wall?  You knew what would happen.  It happened.  4951

My kid(age 9) actually likes sushi if not too Spicey. She has attended three seminars from the founder of the Houston Sushi club. I belive his name is Carl Rosa. So she will take that challenge.....LOL. She is picky though and prefers certain fish over other fish and hates too many seasonings. 4951
