I got the notice a few months ago, & postponed once. Today I called to see if I can be dismissed since I'm self employed & have nobody to cover for me. I explained that when I turn someone away from my business because I have to go to jury duty, it's a potentially huge loss for my business. Blah the lady said I still have to come, but I can try to explain the situation to the judge. Ya that sounds fun.
My dad suggested I just show up dressed like Honey Boo Boo & that should be enough to be dismissed lol. 4951

@OhHappyPets:

Just claim you have bad moral character Emoticon I got a notice just a few days ago and had to laugh at that option.
Luckily I have one kid who I don't have a babysitter for and one kid due to be born in the next 2 weeks. Exempted!

@OhHappyPets: When one of the lawyers asks you a question - no matter what it is - jusy say..."If he's gotten this far, he must be guilty". = Dismissed 4951

Judges do hate excuses, no matter what. I'd hate to stand in front of one and try to exempt myself. I'd be shaking like Dorothy in front of the Wizard! 4951

@OhHappyPets: @ALL:This really pisses me off, people trying to get out of their civic duty. Yes everyone has excuses as to why THEY shouldn't go to jury duty. I'm self employed, I have kids, I have no way of going downtown, blah, blah, blah... It is one of the greatest callings of citizenship, I served in the US Navy for more than 5 years to protect and defend our system and way of life and I have fought so other countries around the globe may also enjoy the same freedoms...EXEMPTIONS FROM JURY SERVICE (Gov’t Code, Section 62.106)A person qualified to serve as a petit juror may establish an exemption from jury service if the person:Is over 70 years of age;Has legal custody of a child younger than 12 years of age and the person’s service on the jury requires leaving the child without adequate supervision;Is a student of public or private secondary school;Is a person enrolled and in actual attendance at an institution of higher education;Is an officer or an employee of the senate, the House of Representatives, or any department, commission, board, office, or other agency in the legislative branch of state government;Is summoned for service and have served as a petit juror in Harris County during the current jury wheel reconstitution period. The current period began March 28, 2011. Summons prior to that date do not qualify for this exemption. (This exemption does not apply to Federal and Municipal Court jury service.)Is the primary caretaker of a person who is an invalid unable to care for himself;Is a member of the United States military forces serving on active duty and deployed to a location away from the person’s home station and out of the person’s county of residence.You are not required to claim an exemption. It is your choice. Business reasons are NOT lawful excuses. 4951

What jury summons? I'm sorry, but I did not receive a jury summons. Have no idea what you're talking about. 4951

Man I wish I could get jury duty.  Only got called three times,  first time went and they told us it was a case of child rape and asked f we could be objective.   I was honest and told them I could not.  Plus i did not want sit through the graphic evidence.  2nd time was when I was moving , so I had to tell them I was no longer a resident of the county.    3rd time I went to Conroe.  One of the last people on the list, then they say, ok you have fulfilled your duty, we don't need you, thanks.     Anyway to get back on the list by chance>? 4951

I was called twice, and served for three days on one of the two calls.  After I left the trial each day, I went to work for five or six hours to try and keep up.  It was a drunk driving case.  At first, I was annoyed by it but soon realized that if I was stuck in the same position as the accused drunk driver in the case I served, I would want a good jury.  Since then, I realize it truly is our duty to serve and help insure the justice system works properly.  4951

I actually love jury service and have had the privilege to serve as a juror on some cases.My wife wasn't a fan until she went and got picked.  Now she looks forward to getting a summons.Just do it, you may be surprised.  Watching the legal process in action is exciting.   Take the Metro, it will drop you off in front of the jury assembly room and pick you up behind it. 4951

I think if the government paid your actual salary instead of the few bucks they throw at you, more people would be willing to do it. A lot of companies do not pay you if you serve on a jury. The government wastes enough money as it is - they can afford to pay you what you make. What they give you doesn't even cover parking. 4951

I agree with @WTF.

I've been called a couple of times, and I had a boss who actually told me, in a serious tone, to get out of it. We were short-handed and he did not want me to go. I was ticked being put int hat situation! But, in that situation, I had a pre-summons and had to call in to a number the day before to find out if we still had to go or if we were excused. I ended up being excused.

My second summons was assigned for my first week at a new job - after being unemployed for 8 months. I wrote a letter explaining the situation and they deferred it to two months later. I went and sat in a room until 3p before they excused us.

In both cases, I was fortunate that my company covered my salary, but I can understand the hardship for those like @OhHappy, who run their own business, and others, like my DH, who work hourly-waged jobs. My husband has yet to go to one doctor's appt with my kids bc if he doesn't go to work, he doesn't get paid. $8 from the government for a whole day is not going to keep food on people's table. 4951

Yeah, yeah, civic duty blah blah. I'm sure it would be fun.

Don't just condemn everyone for "trying to get out of it". I was summoned for 8/28 and I'm still currently pregnant with a baby that's due 8/20.
