I agree with
@WTF.

I've been called a couple of times, and I had a boss who actually told me, in a serious tone, to get out of it. We were short-handed and he did not want me to go. I was ticked being put int hat situation! But, in that situation, I had a pre-summons and had to call in to a number the day before to find out if we still had to go or if we were excused. I ended up being excused.
Â
My second summons was assigned for my first week at a new job - after being unemployed for 8 months. I wrote a letter explaining the situation and they deferred it to two months later. I went and sat in a room until 3p before they excused us.

In both cases, I was fortunate that my company covered my salary, but I can understand the hardship for those like
@OhHappy, who run their own business, and others, like my DH, who work hourly-waged jobs. My husband has yet to go to one doctor's appt with my kids bc if he doesn't go to work, he doesn't get paid. $8 from the government for a whole day is not going to keep food on people's table. 4951
