Because entitlements are ruining this country, and if you're broke than you deserve to feel the shame of that every day. OKAY OKAY, NO THIS IS NOT WHAT I THINK! But some guy just posted something similar on the Newcaney.com Facebook page in response to a charity school supplies drive so I've officially started a collection of "Things I really wanted to tell someone when they are being a complete jerk but couldn't because I represent a professional company" 4951

True legitimate needs should always be met by society and that definitely includes the needs of kids at school. They are not in that boat by their own choices and actions. Kids are our future and should not have their education impacted by basic needs not being met.

However, I will always have a problem catering to the healthy and capable, but lazy who want to benefit and take from the hard work of others. 4951

you just gotta love some people....in spite of them being a total f'ing meanspirited shortsighted idiot. if you want an economically strong country then you provide a quality education for the next generation in order to maximize their income so they can take care of your lazy *** when you get old. ironic that in this vindictively conservative mindset, it's perfectly ok for rick perry to call for a multimillion dollar helping hand to the rocket launch business and more tax breaks for business. oh so business doesn't have to stand on its own but people underemployed or unemployed or just flatass poor don't deserve help to raise better prepared workers to make the society richer as a whole? 4951

False premise alert.  The OP's portrayal of anti entitlement people is false.The welfare system is full of fraud and people who choose not to work, because they want everything on the tax payer's dime.Spare a moment of the sympathy you show for welfare recipients for the people who work hard to pay their own way and provide that welfare.It's not about shaming anyone.  That's your thought projected onto others.  It's about supporting yourself. 4951

@fcabanski: This was not meant to spark a debate on the welfare system. The guy was being downright rude concerning children. Regardless of your views of welfare, the kids have nothing to do with whatever choices their parents have made in life. I can understand not wanting to give the guy on the corner a buck because he may just go spend it at the liquor store... but come on, you are giving kids paper, pencils, backpacks. Things that will almost certainly improve their lives and their experience while being education in a positive way. You might donate a book by Carl Sagan to a kid and inspire the worlds next great astrophysicist.  Imagine growing up without a solid support structure. What if someone nurtured your interest and gave you the tools to turn them into a passion, how much better your life might be?

@Drekonix:
Very nicely said.  This year I actually signed up for the Houston Back to school Fest for free school supplies at U of H.  Money has been so tight that every little bit helps. 4951

True need is just that....TRUE need, AFTER luxuries have been eliminated and sacrifices have been made.

Before I looked to any government program or community sharing event to give me a handout, I would have taken the Dave Ramsey approach and been unloading the fluff and non-essentials from my life such as cable or satellite, Internet, smartphone services, etc. Then, when the crisis was over, bring them back as able.

Basic needs of food, shelter, school supplies, basic utilities are much more important than my own personal wants and luxury comforts. 4951

@donnatella:
First of all you don't know me from a hole in the wall.  I am at work and on the internet which is none of your business anyway.  You don't know what my family has or hasn't done to keep a roof over our heads.

Maybe you do need to get off your high horse.  I've been posting on this board since 2008 and in the last 2 weeks your answers to some stuff really need to be checked.  I don't know what makes you think you are better than anyone else.

I hope you never in your life need help with anything or have to see how it feels to wonder how you work your butt off everyday but you are still getting no place in life.

On time of that, I am 41 and have been legally working and paying taxes since I was 16.  If getting some free school supplies for my daughter is an issue for you keep your comments to yourself.  I am not living off welfare or asking anyone on here for a hand out.

I realize you have alot of friends on here but your posting attitude has sucked as far as I'm concerned. 4951

If you did everything you could and still had a need, then it was a true need and my comments do not apply to you or your situation. Trust me, if I direct them to you, there will be no question at all.

Every day hearing about the doers being out-numbered by the takers is grating on the minds of the doers and the sentiment is only going to get worse until something is done about the abuse and the mindset that has taken hold lately. I am not the line b1tch when it comes to the frustration, attitude and outspoken commentary. There will be more....MUCH more.

So you don't like my attitude and comments lately...fine, I can live with that. We should just agree to disagree, and move on. 4951

ever dawn on anyone that the real problem is that even when people are employed, often the income is too little to actually make a living? while the cost of living has been rising every year, the effective income of families has been stagnant since the 70s...small wonder that there are more and more people in need in spite of employment. go look up the stats. the houston area has been insulated from this factor in some respect because of the oil and gas industry base but it is here too 4951

wow.....donatella a little overboard. I usually dont chime in on a smack down debate between 2 members but I know for a fact Dotti is far from what your portraying,....she works full time and is supporting her family while paying also for her hubbies continuing education and keeps her child in child enrichment activities that she also pays for and I NEVER have a problem with my tax dollars helping someone helping themselves.I also do not have issues with anyone using school/college grants for anything. No I dont want to see a dr or lawyer making 200 grand a year get their kids free lunches but someone working full time while supporting continuing education in their home......I will personally buy that baby the best backpack out there if they turn your request down.Some people just go way too far in assumptions! 4951
