When is a good time for them to get their own policy and who is good for them to go through and still be safely covered? 4951

Officially still in college and not having their own cars, just using ours.  We are just checking around again to see better pricing. They are 20 and 21. If we totally drop them and they don't carry insurance they will have a tougher time later trying to get it without being continuously covered. 4951

Make sure your agent has them insured on the least expensive car, preferably one with liability only. They are still covered on all of your vehicles but the premium is better.

BTW...anyone that you allow to drive your car is covered unless they are specifically excluded in writing on your policy. 4951

If they drive, they pay insurance.

Dump them off the policy when they turn 18. 4951

We have 21 year old twins. One is in the military so he's basically independent, working "full time", got his own car and has his own insurance. The other is a full time college student and working part time. We upgraded the vehicle she was driving (the one they shared while in high school) to a newer model vehicle and cover her on our insurance. Is that fair? You could argue that it's not but one is dependent, the other isn't. Such is life.

Added: she graduates next May so she has until the end of 2015 and then she'll come off ours and have to get her own. 4951
