It starts on the side if his mouth then looks like a large goiter on his neck.  He is still happy and go luck.  My mom picked me up this morning at 10am-everything was fine. I let them out back real quick and then in the crates.  I got home at 5 and there it is!I called the vet immediately and they said to give him Benadryl.  Anyone else have experiences like this? 4951

Our older dog developed a "knot" on the back of her neck.  We had a vet check it but it was benign.  He didn't do anything to treat it anf it eventually went away.  It's back now, but we're just leaving it alone. 4951

@KTownTexican: I am hoping that is it-I am not cleared by my dr to drive yet so taking him to the vet tomorrow will not be an easy task.He does eat bugs-I let him out back right before I left so maybe he ate one.  I also gave them new carrot treats today.

he might have bit a wasp or a bee.the bendryl suppresses the allergic response which is the swelling and the pain. it's a good idea to keep a bottle of 25 mg benadryls in the house and also a couple cans of sardines. if your dog gets bitten by a copperhead, you can alleviate some of the severity by dosing them with benadryl appropriate to the dog's weight and feed a couple cans of the sardines before the reaction sets in 4951

@ProblemAgain:  I didn't know about the sardines.  Any idea why they help?@Okiedokie:  Let me know if you need a ride to the vet, or anywhere else.

@Retired_Engineer: That's why I am hoping/thinking he had an allergic reaction or bit.  I do not see how anything else could have gotten that large, that quickly

My cat was bitten by one of those little brown/gray grass snakes, and while those snakes aren't venomous, it did swell a bunch. The worst part of it was that the snake was in the house! He had cornered and killed it...good boy! 4951

@attila: It's a snake bite-I found the puncture wounds.  I am guessing since he is acting fine, I don't need to take him in.

then give him some benadryl and a can of sardines...it makes the swelling go away quicker too..(TWSS)i must have had10 or more dogs bitten by copperheads..some are slow learners and go right back after thyey get bitten...but it does help a lot to reduce the swelling and pain. i was tempted to try it when i was bitten...as to why the sardines work, they interfere with the venom or the reaction to the venom. the woman who founded twyla's taught me that one and it works. 4951

@Okiedokie: As long as he's not having trouble breathing, I'm sure he'll be fine. If I'm remembering correctly, they just gave my cat a steroid shot for the swelling because the bite was near the elbow joint of his front paw, and he was having a lot of difficulty walking. Just keep a close eye on him...I know you will!
