Has anyone installed a generator inlet box to power a portable generator? The electrician is wanting to charge over 500 to do this ...my DH wants to DIY. Thanks. 4951

Call Preferred Electric.  Best pricing for an electrician around.  And he is licensed and insured.  He just installed a whole house surge protector for me, and rewired my garage.  If you call they will give you a free estimate.  281-361-6918

@Fallon: That's who I called...seemed high to us.

I hooked up one of these boxes to my house, just buy the right parts (all at Home Depot) then go online and they showed step by step. Works great, take your time. 4951

I did it myself and I had power to half of the house during the last hurricanes. 4951

I have installed them in the past, and they are very simple if you have a understanding of basic electricity. When you purchase the transfer switch it should come with the instructions.   4951

The key is not to hurt yourself or anyone else, to do it right you will need to pull your meter, if you have the old type that spins around, no problem. If you have a smart meter and pull it without center point blessing they will be on site in about half a hour to pick your meter up, and believe me you will beg to get it back. This is to confirm that no back feed will occur during generator operation.
Rather simple power from CP to meter pull meter, from meter to breaker box re routed to transfer switch from new transfer switch back to breaker box, then choose what breakers you leave closed, open the rest. 4951

Sorry for the hijack but .............

Is having the whole house or even partial house wired for automatic generator power if necessary a good or bad or indifferent selling point?

Is there a return on the investment?

@Stealth83: the return on investment will be having the whole house powered during an extended time of no power ( like the 13 days we were out during IKe). Now having said that- how often does that happen? We've been here 12 years and have had it happen twice. Our neighbor has been here over 20 and had it happen twice. I'm not sure having a whole house generator would be a deal breaker on a house sale.

As far as DIY we're major into DIY- dh is a mechanical engineer with a minor in electrical. He considered doing that project and decided the risk wasn't worth it for as few times as we would use it. We will live with the portable genie alone.

I'm not looking to power the AC during a power outage...we just want to have out fridge and freezer on along with some light. Hopefully we'll figure out how to do it without electrocuting ourselves LOL 4951
