Just trying to get an idea. Scares me to let them or at least one of them do it. 4951

I like being there to keep my eye on them. It's probably the safest thing now. 4951

I think it depends on each individual child.
I would trust my 14 year old niece but not my 14 year old nephew.
Just go with your gut. 4951

never....lolIf they were a great swimmer I still wouldn't without a group. Children just shouldn't be out alone anymore. Always a group.Also remember no matter how well they swim it just takes a fall or someone jumping on them and even though pools have life guards they are not always on guard mentally. 4951

@Burnsway:

I totally agree. I was really considering till today when the lifeguards weren't paying very close attention and there were a lot of people there. She's only 10 1/2 but I would trust her but it's the others I worry about 4951

Most community pools require them to be a certain age. I believe 13. At least that's what age they had to be to get in alone when I was a lifeguard. 4951

@taramay:
Ours is height too and its ridiculous as some kids are way tall. It should be done on skill, not height or age. When I was a kid you had to pass a safety test before you were allowed without a parent......it usually consisted of being able to do one lap, hold breath under water x amount of time and doggie paddle not touching the floor for x amount of time. For parents letting kids go on their own, it is a parent's choice but trust me when I say they don't follow the rules when they get there. This summer alone I have witnessed several kids ranging age 5 - teens at our pool without parents and almost the whole time some other parent there is having to babysit them and get after them for running, jumping, bullying,dunking, and screaming......you name it.  Occasionally a life guard will speak out with a threat of time out......it's a joke and I don't care for spending my time there watching other people's kids trying to keep mine safe. 4951

 I do not like my son to have friends over swimming in the pool unless I am there and he is 18! 4951

It varied with each child. Their maturity, responsibility and ability to trust has to be taken into consideration.

ALONE never happened for any of my daughters.... At least 2 together....preferred a group. 4951

My husband and I were at our community pool this weekend and saw about 8 kids standing outside the entrance smoking. These kids were between the ages of 10 to 16, I wanted to go slap those cigarettes out of their mouths. When I saw that I told my husband that our future kids are never going to the pool by themselves. But of course its all in how you raise them. I'm just paranoid. Sorry for the rambling your post just reminded of this past weekend. Lol 4951
