I follow the directions perfectly and it never turns out right.  I can make the slow cooker oatmeal fine but not the stove top kind.I have the same problem with rice. 4951

@Okiedokie: I buy the boudin rice mix, in a 2lb package at HEB, for this very same reason. It's already cooked, so there's no messing it up. As far as the oatmeal goes, I've actually never tried to make it that way...I love the Quaker Oats- Peaches -n- Cream instant packs. Emoticon

@BBQguy: I always brown mine first with onions and garlic-it's the only way I can make it.

The only way I've eaten oatmeal since I was a little kid - raw oatmeal, 2 tablespoons of honey & pour chocolate milk over it. It's the way my German grandmother made it for me back then. 4951

I like my oatmeal on the under done side- I use half as much water and throw if in the microwave for a minute. IMO the rice and oatmeal recipes use too much water. I think for rice I use 1 1/2 cups of water for 1 cup of rice . Throw it all in a pot bring to a boil while stirring- cover turn the burner on low and forget it for about 25 minutes or until the water is gone 4951

Rice is SOOOO easy on the stove top.Basic rice, add 1 cup rice to 2 cups water White rice is usually 2 to 1.Both medium grain (the best) or long grain, Jasmine or basmati.Heat the pan on high, add a little salt.Cover.Bring to a boil.Stir.Lower heat (I mostly lower it almost to the lowest setting).Set timer for 25 minutes.Forget-about-it.When the timer goes off, give it a stir.Serve.I like to add a little Knox low sodium chicken bullion to the water at the start to give a little extra flavor.Brown rice is a little more involved, but if you like medium grain (the best) or long grain brown rice.Up the water to 4 cups per cup of rice.Add salt.Cover.Bring to a rapid boil.Lower heat to a slow boil for 45 minutes.Drain.Serve.If you fail at that, try ParboiledEmoticonarboiled Rice:Rough rice that has gone through a steam-pressure process before milling. This procedure gelatinizes the starch in the grain, and ensures a firmer, more separate grain. Parboiled rice is favored by consumers and chefs who desire an extra fluffy and separate cooked rice.If you fail at that, get the 90 second pre-cooked MW bags. 4951

@WskyTngoFxtrt:   They are very thin.  You eat them by rolling them up.
@sapphire: That's called a tortilla!! Actually, I believe I may have had those years ago living in Germany. 4951

@WskyTngoFxtrt:
I eat that too! Although I've never tried it with chocolate milk, just regular or vanilla almond milk.

I don't measure anything when I make oatmeal.  Just some water in the pan, let it heat up and add oatmeal, set the timer for 5 minutes stirring every so often, then wah la.Now the other day, I put in way too much oatmeal which soaked up all the water and did not cook thoroughly so you do have to be careful on how much oatmeal you add.Don't give up.  4951

@sapphire: Being German, we ate them a lot growing up. They take awhile because they have to rise.
They are NOT thin.Typically you make them the night before, let them sit in the fridge over night, than pop them in the oven the next morning.This is what they look like (web search if you don't believe me). 4951
