Is it worth the drive to go to the factory with the kids?? We have never gone and are looking for some different things to do this summer. 4951

My kids liked it when they were in elementary school. I thinks it would be a good outing depending on how old your kids are. 4951

We went a few years ago and I wasn't all that impressed; I don't think our kids were either. And the little scoop of ice cream they give you.....I'd rather just drive down to CVS and pick up several pints in different flavors and gorge myself. 4951

I  recently went with my friend & her mother, who was visiting from Missouri.  I did enjoy it, the scoop of ice cream is just about that - a scoop.  But you can buy additional scoops for $1.00 each. It gives you a chance to try some of their new flavors.  It was a lot of walking and young kids and teens may not enjoy watching work lines and boring tour guide lecture.  They do charge to get in - they use to not when they first started the tours moons ago.  The group was about 25 people, so it was hard to hear the guide unless you just stayed right next to her.  I do not believe they have weekend tours, so you should check the website for times of the tours. 4951

I found the tour interesting, but I guess it depends on how old the kids are. As stated above you pay for the tour so I guess the "free" ice cream discounts that a bit.  If you just stop by, which we do frequently on the way to Austin, it is a dollar a scoop with about 20 different varieties.Makes a nicer day trip if you plan lunch downtown and work the downtown shops a bit. About 90 minutes each way, if you're only in it for the ice cream go to HEB. 4951

@mommyof5:
It is fun.....   I was totally impressed by how super clean everything is, literally you could eat off the floors in that place!!!!   IF you want there is a place nearby you can visit with minture horses, this would be a good place to go with the kids so it would not be all about the creamery.....   BTW my hubby worked for BlueBell for 20 years - thats how I got FAT !!!!   lol 4951

Not far away is a bakery called Must Be Heaven.

Pick up a pie to bring home. The dutch apple (frozen) travels well. Bake it yourself then top with a scoop of Bluebell.

@GoldenGirl:  So was I!!  Wow! It's worth taking the tour once. We usually take out-of-town visitors there, it's a nice drive and the walking is not bad even for older folks.

Funny, I was thinking of taking a day off and taking my older two (7 and 4). I thought it was 45 minutes away, not 90. (Is that right?!) But if there is another thing to do out that way (miniature horse place mentioned) then it might be more worth it! 4951
