From our Inbox:"Good
morning! I just wanted to put the word out that two of my vehicles were
broke into last night. I live in the South Woodland Hills subdivision.
As far as we can tell nothing was even taking out of either vehicles.
This is the third time we have been hit over the years. I called to
report it at 8:30 this morning, but still waiting for an officer to call
back to make the report. Just so scary to think someone was on my
property, and in my car during the night." 4951

You can tell if someone is old or young by how they get in the cars, broken windows they are young. Professionals you won't even know they were in the car. At our old house we had some problems with them coming up on our drive way and smashing windows out if they saw something of interest. I bought a hunting camera and tied it to the tree so it took pictures of every movement on the drive way and installed sensor lights. They also have cheap baby monitors and you can leave one in the car and one next to the bed and you can hear everything happening in your car at night. We needed up moving before another broken window, but just an idea. 4951

Oh forgot they can dust for finger prints on car too and if there is any blood on the glass, they can collect that too to match at a future date. 4951

@angiekaye: and they have to actually dust for fingerprints. i watched a sheriff dealing with a stolen f-250 king ranch edition ford. he didn't bother to call the forensics guys to fingerprint the truck. instead he was in the truck with his hands all over everything...and he didn't bother to take the jackhandle along to get that fingerprinted, the handle from the jack they had used to strip the truck of tires and rims. all he wanted to do was make out the report so it could be turned into the insurance. lazy lazy lazy...maybe he would have been late to the donut shop

thats true, we had to almost force the officer to finger print our car when the thieves broke in and stole my sons stereo.  The officer was like "there really isn't a reason to do that not like it would help us"  I took that as "I dont want to do all this extra paperwork!"   4951

I know peoples who had their house broken into. The cops rarely ever dust for fingerprints.. If at all for thief, robbery, car break ins. Murders than they do. I wouldn't count on it........ for a car vandalism! 4951

@angiekaye: and that's why you get professional thieves. they get a long time committing crimes before they run across someone who really works a case to catch the bad guys

Most of you spend too much time watching CSI.  The reason an officer is reluctant to dust for prints on a vehicle is quite simple. Unless you wipe your own prints off your car each and every day, all you get is a ton of smudges when you dust where there are prints on top of prints on top of prints. It is useless to do it unless you can isolate an area when there are no other prints. There is no requirement that an officer must lift prints, it is up to his discretion and he must consider the surface, the number of other prints that are on the same surface, weather, humidity and other variables. For the record, I spent 15 years in law enforcement and I was a latent print expert. 4951

what about the jack handle from the jack that they lifted the truck with to steal the tires and rims? i assume that would have the prints of the thief. and my opinion is he was a fat,  lazy *** who didn't want to be bothered. 4951

oh and he did mention he was just filling out the paperwork so the owner of the stolen truck could claim it on insurance...that was right after he threw the jack handle off into the bushes..that does pretty much define a lazy ***, doesn't it? .maybe if they did run some fingerprints, when they finally caught up with some of these guys they would be facing multiple charges instead of getting free passes for the ones they weren't caught for 4951

Hopefully, for me, keeping vehicles in the garage will deter it somewhat.   I don't keep anything of value in a car anyhow.   I know some folks who leave their keys and wallets/purses in their cars in the garage all the time. 4951

Is the jack handle surface smooth? Most of them have a rough, textured type paint to them which makes them difficult to lift prints from. 4951
