I recently lost my job and have been very diligent about getting a new one. My Honey's Son is having Surgery on the 23rd of July in Philadelphia @CHOP? Hospital ?? We CAN NOT afford to send him up there. (SOOOO MANY bills behind & he hasn't seen them in months now) I of course feel responsible with my not being able to find steady employment. He is heartbroken and his kids are missing him like crazy. Does ANYONE have any suggestions or ideas about whether or not airlines have any kind of programs to assist? I am desperate . To see my honey cry because he can't get to his children is killing me. He is giving up hope. Also I am a private duty caregiver looking for work if anyone knows anyone that needs a reliable, mature, caring person to work with their elderly parents/grandparents please let me know. I have only been working "piece" jobs a few hours here and there. I NEED a more steady hour job. Thanks in advance. 4951

No, sadly I don't. I was going to try and go to Lone star college to take the course but I can't afford it. 4951

Why do you feel responsible?  Does your 'Honey' work?  Sorry if I don't sound sympathetic, but we have had too many scammers on here telling a sad story and asking for money. 4951

Retired Engineer, I am not offended. I understand totally. I am not asking for money. I am just wondering if the airlines do any kind of assist program. They would even be able to check with the hospital because it's a scheduled surgery so they could verify it with them. And yes he works but with the living expenses, rent, elec, gas, car note and me not working, we are barely getting by. 4951

@Cynthia#1:   I doubt that there are any airlines that give free tickets, but some do offer discounts for family emergencies.  Call them and explain the situation to see if they can assist you.

Thank you Retired Engineer. I appreciate the information. Again I'm not trying to 'scam' anyone. It's just been so difficult with me not working. And now with his son having surgery and him not being able to be with his child during that time makes me feel like crap because if I was working full time like I was and had the monies that I did coming in when working full time,  I wouldn't even have posted. I'm sorry if I offended or put anyone on edge with my post.Have a good night everyone. 4951

@Cynthia#1 I saw that Humble ISD is having a job fair very soon (it may have been today but you can still apply) for food services, custodial and transportation. Bus drivers start at like 14.00 an hour, and there are benefits as well. Check out the website.
A few years ago I needed a bereavement fare to go to dad's funeral (RIP), and they only reduce it a tiny bit. Idk if they do it for surgeries. I put all my trips home that year on a credit card and racked up a 6,000 bill taking the kids to see grandpa a few last times. Fares are good right now, but he will need to check ASAP so he can get the advance fare. I hope he can get to be there for his son. You sound sincere. God bless your family. 4951

I just asked my wife about this.  A few years ago, her mother was in a hospital in California and not expected to live.  Her brother suggested she call the airlines and ask for a bereavement discount. She found that none of the airlines offer that any longer. We pulled the money together for a short advance ticket (more expensive) and she got there to visit with her mom before she passed.Maybe his son, or some other relative, can buy him a ticket.  Good luck. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: The discount was like 40 bucks or something. I think it was United.

Have you tried contacting charities? I don't think the Ronald McDonald House does transportation, but it couldn't hurt to check. If they don't, maybe they can point you to somebody that does. 4951

Taking a bus would probably be cheaper. 4951

@taramay: Agreed. It will take a couple of days traveling by ground but it is a very viable option. Given the fact that the surgery isn't until 7/23, there is more than enough time to get there by bus. Travel doesn't always have to be by air, especially since there are no funds. I'm a little surprised of the urgency in finding funds from others when bus travel is available. 4951
