Do they do drivers ed at the high school? Our daughter turns 16 in a few days but she is our eldest so I don't know how it works these days. Ours was done through the high school outside of school hours. I looked online but the place on Northpark wants $600 which seems outrageous.

Help! (and thanks) 4951

The high schools do not offer driver's ed here. There are a few options out there. Safeway, Sears, and parent taught.

We did parent taught for both of our kids. It's pretty easy to do as long as you have the patience to take your teen out to drive. Good luck. 4951

It's my son's first day at Safeway (on Northpark) and it was 500. I could only put one of mine in last summer, and the other had to wait due to the $$$. Sears in Humble is a close second at around 450. Mine was done at school years ago. Nothing is cheap these daysEmoticon I suppose I could have done it myself, but I'm sure Safeway does it much better, and they get the insurance discount. 4951

We actually were able to get a discount on our insurance with the parent taught as well. It is a valid drivers ed class and our insurance allowed for it. 4951

We used Sears for both of ours, they seem to a decent enough job, and it was SOOOO much easier than the nerve racking I went through the first week with our first one. 4951

Thanks! Ugh that's a lot but if we get an insurance discount it'd be a lot better. 4951

Both my children went to Safeway. They do a great job in teaching them. Either way, parents now have to spend 20 hours (10 day, 10 night) in the car with their child and record it. You have to turn it in when you apply for the license. If your children listen to you and you can stand to be doing their first drives in YOUR car, parent taught might work. Young teens tend to listen to a teacher more so than when a parent is telling them to do something. Also, do we really want parents teaching their children when they cannot follow any rules of the road themselves?   4951

Having a certificate from the drivers ed class, they took the driving test with their normal instructors, which was an advantage as they were not as nervous since there was a certain familiarity.Note - That was 2009 for the last one 4951

Even when you go to Safeway, your child has to get their permit at the DPS and has to take the driving test at the DPS. When my son went to Safeway in 2006, Safeway did both for you! But the laws have changed a lot since then. 4951
