I noticed a lady walking what looked like 2 Amstaffs or Pitbulls on the lake at Forrest Garden this morning. I have nothing against the breed in fact I have owned/bred and shown Amstaffs . The problem is too many people want to own them but think they are like any other breed just stronger, that is a big mistake. I have witnessed dogfights at shows involving the more aggressive breeds all because the handlers were distracted or careless. I hope this lady knows her dogs. I just don't want anyone's child or pet injured or worse.   4951

a 6 year old girl was mauled by 2 pitbull dogs 2 weeks ago in Cincinnati while she was playing in her own yard . They belonged to her neighbor , who owned 3 pitbulls . The police were called & both pitbulls were shot & killed , the 3rd one was taken  away as it was not involved in the attack .The little girl is still in the hospital & will have several more surgeries before she is released. The news said Cincinnati is trying to pass a law against  owning pitbull breeds but is having a hard time getting enough people to sign the bill. They said  if they can't do it one way they will pass a law so that all pitbull owners must carry  $100,000. insurance on each dog they own  .I think the insurance is a good idea no matter what kind of dog you own  , especially if it is a large vicious breed . This little girls medical bills are already over  $300,000 . 4951

@uneasyrider: I don't have anything against specific breeds of dogs, and wholly agree with you that there are a lot of owners that simply can not handle their own dogs.  So while the dogs are not at fault, and the owners are, it is rarely the owners that suffer the aftereffects of a significant dog bite.

Any owner of a dog needs to k ow how to handle it properly. Not really sure what the point of this thread is.

A couple years ago a neighbor's dog (black lab looking dog) ran after and attacked a guy walking his leashed pit. This guy and his pit have lived on our street for years and have never had any problems. After the dog bit a chunk out of the guys arm his pit went after the dog and got him by the ear. The owner of the lab came running out yelling to shoot the pit. Emoticon

@taramay: No argument from me on knowing your dog but an Amstaff or Pitbull could've taken the arm off so I think that demands a little more caution on the handlers part. I realize some labs are aggressive especially towards other dogs but so are Kerry Blues, Malamutes and Akitas etc. but the Amstaff or Pit has much more biting power.   4951

Right. But I still don't understand the point you're trying to make. Not trying to stir the pot, just genuinely confused. 4951

of course...its always the pit! if its any other breed of dog attacking someone, it doesnt make the news!!

I am a proud RESPONSIBLE pittbull owner!! And I am so over this discussion. Its worn out by people who dont have the knowledge to make an argument.

@taramay:In my observation the lady walking the 2 dogs did not appear to be as cautious as she should have been with that particular breed especially around other pets and small children that you often see on the lake at that time of day. Again, that was my observation. I know now you're asking why didn't I say that to begin with, I was making an attempt at being tactful , something new for me.   4951

@uneasyrider:

Ok, now I get it! I can respect that completely. I have a pit mix and I'm extra careful with him. Not because I think he'd ever do anything, but more to protect him from other stupid people.

I have another dog who isn't a pit mix and she's way more likely to get herself into trouble. We had to stop going to the dog park because she can't handle not being the boss.

It's sad that people assume they should be cautious around my pit mix when really they need to be more aware of my other dog. 4951

@ bind My laces:You said the key words RESPONSIBLE OWNER. Like you, I have owned Pits , Amstaffs and a Rottweiler. I'm glad to say I took the time to chose from a good breeder who bred for temperament and I took the time to work with all of my dogs. Frankly the Cairn Terrier I own right now is more aggressive than any dog I have owned to this point but again he is only 15 pounds. His bit could be painful but far from deadly. Again I like Amstaffs, Pitbulls, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and  Bull Terriers. The problem is I can no longer own one thanks to the folks who practically destroyed these breeds in the eyes of the public by being irresponsible.  4951
