This morning, I noticed Bentley(foster pup) playing with something in a small hole he's been working on. I made some calls, and found out it belongs to the cable company. Turns out, they ran the cable from the front of our property at the box next to the sidewalk, all the way around the back to the other side, and up along the garage to where it enters the house. Emoticon Two things bother me about this:1) Why in God's name wouldn't you go under the driveway like everyone else?? It's a lot closer, for sure!2) It MIGHT be 3 inches below the surface where the hole is. After further inspection around the house, I saw where it's showing in several spots where there is no hole dug...just right at the bottom of the grass. If I pull on it, it easily comes right up. Are all cables buried this shallow?? The CS rep said they would send someone out to "Have a look!". Now that one of the dogs has found it, I'm certain it's going to become a permanent toy for all of them. Emoticon  4951

@BBQguy: That sounds way to shallow to me. Someone was half-assing the installation.

@BBQguy:  They use a little trenching tool that cuts a small "slice" in the lawn and lays the cable at the bottom.  It was probably a lot cheaper for them to run the cable longer than to dig holes and run a cable under the driveway.  I'm not saying any of this makes sense, but that's how they think. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: I just went down the other side of the house, and it looks like they just peeled back the sod and laid it in there. I've never noticed it until now and we've never had problems really, so I guess it's fine. I'm just worried about the dogs thinking it's a chew toy. Our backyard is strictly for them to play and "go" when we don't walk them. I  clean up the land mines, and our lawn guy mows once a week. Other than that, no one is ever back there.

@BBQguy  Is your house new construction. That is wrong! I thought they had to be 8 inches deep. Curious how this unfolds. Keep us posted. 4951

@BBQguy:  I would contact them and have them retrench it.  Not only can your dogs access the cable, but it could be cut with a lawn mower.  Then, they would have to run a new cable (don't let them splice it).  Just laying it under the sod is not acceptable.  They usually lay them 2" to 4" deep in yards.  The main cables are probably a little deeper.@cgm10sne1:  I don't know that there is a minimum requirement for cable TV cables (there is for electric cables).  The 8" is required for water piping so that it is deep enough so that they don't freeze.

Our labs have dug up the cable twice. The last time it was replaced, the crew buried it just under the surface. That lasted maybe a month. They came and did a better job when I called; I still had to put rocks in some places..... 4951
