But it was a couple of years ago, so I want to get everyone's current opinion. Sentinel Vs. Trifexis.

Trifexis is so expensive, but so convenient! Sentinel does the same thing, right, but is cheaper?

Is there a better alternative? My dogs all have long hair, so it is hard to give the Frontline.

Looking for best cost effective method of preventing heartworm and fleas.

Thanks guys!!! 4951

We use ComboGuard! Before moving to Texas, we had blinders on to HW disease, and just used topical preventatives for fleas in the Summer months. Our vet uses a company to mail out our pups' pills, which makes forgetting them a lot harder. They average around $20 per dog, and it's taken directly out of our account every month. I've never used anything else, so I can't speak to how CG compares to the ones you mentioned. All I know, is it works! Emoticon  4951

My dog was on Comfortis which I believe is similar to Trifexis where you do not have to do the frontline.  The vet pushed Comfortis because it is easier and very effective against fleas.  It depends on your dog but my little poodle could not tolerate the Comfortis.  She was throwing up when she was on it so we are back to Frontline and Heartguard.  My dog used to be on Sentinel but could not get it at one point because of some production issue.  My dog is on the Heartguard instead. 4951

Thank you @BBQguy and @calliecat! I will have to look into ComboGuard. That price sounds similar to Trifexis. I know that Comfortis works, but I would have to buy a separate heartworm prevention with it, which is doable. I just need to find out the price of Comfortis. I just can't stand to put the liquid Frontline on my long-haired dogs.

Mine is on Sentinel but she is still itching like crazy everytime she comes inside.  I need to get her next dose for July so I am going to see what the vet suggests.

It stinks because the neighbors have outside dogs that I don't think they treat for anything so their fleas just jump the fence and harrass my baby.

I think for a 45 pound dog the pills are $15.00 a month. 4951

@dotti573. Thank you! I heard there was some controversy over whether sentinel and trifexis were safe.

Our pups is on trifexis. Only issue we have had with it is she doesn't like the taste of it. I have to really hide it from her to get her to take it. 4951

All of our dogs are on Trifexis haven't seen a single flea on them yet. Works wonders. The only downside to it is it doesn't keep ticks away, although I only worry about that when we go walking in the woods. It is kinda expensive, but definitely worth the cost IMO since it prevents other parasites besides heartworms as well. 4951

We have had a huge flea issue this summer. I wont use trifexis anymore, I suspect that may have been what killed Roxy and both my other dogs get sick after they have it even if they eat first. Im using the sentinel just for now( It only sterilizes the fleas, does not kill them)..maybe one more month thats it...fleas will not go bye bye over night no matter what you do. I will use a very weak form of shampoos and tropical and even sprays if its weak and am very careful of exposure to the dogs eyes and face, but only at the same time I sprinkle the whole house and yard with diatomaceous earth food grade only. If completely safe and you can get it at tractor supply. It suffocates the fleas, you can even dust your dogs with it. It is not toxic.Because its dusty I would put the dogs up while spreading it and leave it in the yard for about 8 hours even longer if you can...dogs can walk on it and even eat it but when your spreading it,  it will cause dust to get in the lungs and could cause asthma attack if your dog(or you) has asthma. I always spread it when I know its gonna rain hours later so it washed it away after a day....lol Its a pain but I see improvement and its natural.It does work but you gotta stay ontop of it because rodents and other critters just bring new fleas in. You can dust your carpets and furniture also and as I said you can even lightly dust your dogs. The fleas walk through it and it coats them down where they cant breath. Its about 12 bucks for a 10 pound or so bag. You can google it and see other ways of using it. Im glad I gave it a try...we are not flea free yet but its getting better weekly and Im not poisoning my dogs to do it! 4951

@mpjp0907: My dogs love it. They act like it's a treat. Freaks!

Its my opinion to just use a cheap safe heartworm pill like heartguard and treat the other issues as they arise, we are exposing our pets and humans to so many toxins trying to kill off things that are not life threatening. 4951

@Burnsway: Good point to consider.

I'm with @Burnsway. For years I did whatever my vet recommended...but now I realize that along with our pets' well-being, they're also concerned about their own pocketbook. My vet pushed Science Diet on us for years....and now it's being labeled as 'full of fillers'. I had mine on Sentinel for years until the factory shut down - then I switched to Trifexis. My little rescue would get sick every time but not seriously. Last month I thought she was dying...so we're back on Heartguard and Frontline. Heartworms scare me so I can't NOT treat them but I hate all the chemicals. 4951

@Zokomo.....My big boy, Gunny (English Mastiff) simply couldn't tolerate Trifexis..........It would make his sick to his stomach, vomiting, temp...  It was just No Bueno.........So, we give both of our boys Advantage Multi.....(It's not a pill, but a monthly topical, and it's for both fleas and heartworm protection...)....And we've never had an issue with either boy.....“The better I get to know men, the more I find myself loving dogs.”

I wonder if I could use Heartguard and Comfortis? My dogs are so hairy, I don't think Frontline makes it through their entire coat, and it's messy. 4951

@herron1345
Thanks for the reply. I have heard of that. I need pills for my dogs, though Emoticon
Unless I keep them really short. I'm not very good with those liquids. Seems like I could never get them just right on their shoulder blades. 4951
