Trying to book a vacation lakefront rental that is pet friendly. No one allows great danes?? They will allow my other two mixed breed little rescues(more likely to cause trouble) not the dane. She said danes are too big. I asked if she only rented to small people. She didn't find the humor. 4951

it's a shame that more hotels & motels do not cater to animals, most pets are better behaved than  most kids . When we travel with our 3 poodles we have been asked to put up  a security deposit of $25. to $50. per dog  to stay in a room for one night . We tell them no problem as long as you come & check out the room when we leave & give us our deposit back at that time . We always get a room with 2 queen size beds , one for us & one for our dogs . 4951

I don't have a problem with a deposit. It's a pain but I get it. I just never had anyone say no to a specific dog. Over the years we have had several danes. Mostly rescues, and they are so well behaved. You are right @WJo  my dogs listen better than my kids lol 4951

@landlady: the difference may be, to the motel/hotel owners, that your kids are less likely to poop on the floor.  Just like people, some pets are good travelers, and some are not.  Maybe the hotel owner you talked to believed the big dog = big poop claim.

@buffaloglenn....most dogs prefer to go outside to do their business & will go to the door & bark to let you know they need to go outside. Maybe it's the size of the dog , they can go over 100 pounds & sometimes size matters to a-lot of people (no pun intended). Most people think "big dog , big mouth & teeth , it's not the back side that scares people,@landlady...I know what you mean my 3 poodles are better behaved than my grand kids & I'm not afraid to take them with me where ever I go . On the other hand my grand kids are noisey , loud, messy & always need to blow their noses , or go to the toilet . My poodles are so much nicer & easier to be around (LOL) .I prefer dogs over children any day of the week. 4951

@buffaloglenn it was a house rental not a hotel, but I have taken my dane to hotels and they never asked what kind of dog. This was my first experience with someone asking what kind of dog. In my experience, my little dogs are more likely to have an accident than the bigger dogs. I bring crates when we travel so if they are left for any length of time they are in their crates when traveling. At home they all stay out and have access to a doggie door so no accidents. I wouldn't take my dogs if they were not trained. I pay a pet deposit. I wouldn't let my big or little dogs poop ruin someone's property. Just don't understand the type of dog requirement. 4951

I for one would not want to stay in a room where I knew dogs had been there, especially on the bed!  Ick.  Sorry, I loved my cat and my previous dog, but it grosses me out knowing that animals may have slept in my hotel room. 4951

It's strange that they will let your little dogs but not your big dog. I could see maybe breed restriction like for "aggressive" breeds but not just by size. Notice I put aggressive in quotes, because I don't think dogs are born aggressive because of a specific breed but how they are raised. I hate to say be dishonest but maybe just don't tell them you are bringing your Great Dane. If he's as well behaved as you say then you shouldn't need to worry about anything getting damaged. No harm no foul. Just weird because a lot of dogs just by their breed may not be conceived as big, they would prob tell me my yellow lab is ok not knowing that he is approximately 110 pounds lol 4951

@Irispixies: I agree. She should make up a breed name like Short Haired Peruvian Goat Herding Dog.  They'll never know any different, lol!
