My backyard is full of them. We found one nest last summer, after our 2 year old daughter got stung by 3 of them. They made their nest under the lip of her baby swing, when we started swinging her, they attacked. We found another one in the same spot this year, killed the wasps and destroyed the nest. We went to go jump on the trampoline a couple of days ago and there was a huge, red wasp eyeballin' us.. Is there anything we can put out in the yard to keep them away?? We had a trap last summer but it didn't do anything. I feel like we can't even go in our own backyard now. Emoticon 4951

@mrsames77:
We use a bug company to come spray every other month. Takes care of any issues you have!

Yeah they are tough to get rid of for sure.    An inexpensive way to at least knock em down, they can't fly and we have the upper hand ...or foot.Spray bottle filled with water and a couple squirts of dish soap.  Coats their wings and they drop like a rock.   If you find yourself going through a lot of wasp spray, this is a little bit cheaper path to take.personally I have not had a lot of luck trapping the suckers.     Maybe someone else has a homemade contraption that will keep em in check.Oh also,  quick remedy to quell wasp sting, alcohol, or windex   takes the pain way for a little while.(alcohol ON the sting, not drank, well, that would prob work too, not recc with the Windex) 4951

@Murf: Thank you!! Awesome! Yup, I went through 2 cans of wasp spray in about a week last summer.. I will definitely be making my own! And thank you for the tip on the stings... hopefully none of us, especially the baby, will be getting stung this year, but if we do, I'll remember that. And remember not to drink 'em too Emoticon lol Thanks again!!!!

yeah the soapy water at least makes it so they can't fly and ya can step on them.   Fair warning, stomping a red one ,doesn't kill it,  Those things are tanks, have to usually grind em in a little bit.I almost think the little hornets are worse.  When I was installing DTV I would always check  the eves where I was going to be running cables, but when I missed em,  man o man, prob 15-25 stings along my elbow, damn  little suckers. 4951

Depends on what the wasp wants as to if a trap works or notWasp Traps, DIYTarget SpeciesPaper wasps, yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets all create problems for homeowners when colony populations rise in late summer and fall. Each species prefers different food sources. Paper wasps and hornets prey on other living insects while yellow jackets prefer garbage, dead insects, sweet foods and meat. All could be attracted to the contents of the Fatal Funnel. Hornets and yellow jackets respond to the protein bait, while paper wasps prefer fermenting fruit.Seasonal BaitsDifferent baits work best in different seasons. The fermenting fruit juice attracts more paper wasps before local fruits ripen and fall, says entomologist Peter Landolt. The sweet juice won't attract wasps until fermentation starts in one to two days, but yellow jackets follow the sugar scent immediately. Hornets and yellow jackets find the trap more often if other food sources such as garbage bins stay covered. Placing the Fatal Funnel in the yard in spring might have even more effect, trapping the queens and the early generation of foragers. Protein baits work better early in the year and might reduce fall populations by 70 percent, according to Copesan. 4951

with stings the best is meat tenderizer or tobacco on the sting after you take the stinger out.  Both draw out the poisons.  if your not a smoker all you need to get is those cheap snuff packs and wet that put on the sting and poof pain gone. 4951

@angiekaye: Unless you're allergic...like I am.  Then it's an epipen injection immediately followed by a trip to the ER within the next 20 minutes or it's analphylactic shock and...well...death.  Yay me!

There are certain places in my yard (1.1 acres) like under the pool bench, in the shed external outlet, the pool storage cabinet they always build nests.So about once a week from late spring to early summer I just check them.At night, with a flashlight and can of spray.No problems.Never got stung doing it that way.Takes usually less than 10 minutes a night to do it. 4951

@FoFa: We need to find out where the nest is. We destroyed the one we knew about but there HAS to be another one somewhere.. When we find out, I will do the stealth move at night! Thanks!!! Emoticon

I went into  anaphylactic shock  a few years back when I  drank some orange juice that was fortified with calcium made from shell fish .... My heart stopped twice in the ambulance on the way to the hospital  & once after we arrived at the hospital. The nurse told me she thought I was a goner for sure when it stopped the 3rd time. .Trust me staying in the hospital for 6 days afterwards was no fun either. So I'm always very careful of what I eat or drink & read every label  on anything I buy before it goes into my mouth . 4951

Never had tobacco or tenderizer work for me or coworkers,  but I'm sure diff. people prob react  differently> if the stinger comes out, when they sting you and it's not a bee, then BEE very careful when removing it.  They are not supposed to come off the wasp. ;-)have never had any dang luck with the traps,  tried all kinds of baits, I think the wasps enjoy terrorizing. 4951
