What are some things I can do locally with a 1 year old?

She naps through the time that the libraries do baby classes. She still refuses to hold my hand...so I need ideas on places that would be safe for her. She also has my fair skin, so sun exposure needs to be kept to a reasonable amount of time. 4951

old mac Donalds farm , lots to see ( animals) & a pool to cool off in when it gets too hot . Also several picnic areas where you can sit & eat when she gets tired . Just take your stroller & enjoy 4951

Thanks @WJo I forgot about that place! I wouldn't let her in the pool though. Too many peeing kids, I wouldn't be willing to go in there myself. I think I'll try taking her during the week when it's not so crowded. I bet I can talk @OhHappyPets into going with us!! 4951

@taramay...when we lived in Kingwood , before moving to Ky. it was one of our favorite places to go & spend the day . I would pack a light lunch & thermos & spend from 10 am till around 2 or 3 pm . With the kids out of school the pool is usually crowded , but the walk around the  animals is nice & we always took something to feed the goats & ducks ( kids loved that ) . There are also play areas inside the malls where the kids can play in the cool a/c when it gets too humid outside to walk around . You can window shop & then let the little one have some play time  in the play areas . There are always small kids she can inter-act with there. 4951

@WJo:
We've tried the play area at the woodlands mall. The kids are supposed to be 6 and under. Apparently people that that as a suggestion and not a rule. There were several big kids in there. She had fun running around, but it irritated me that there were preteens running around there.

I don't like the mall here and frankly don't want to deal with the ghetto people in there that let their kids act all crazy. I have hear of an indoor play area on mills branch. I may try that. I've been planning on going with a friend and her little girl, but that friend has been super flaky recently so I guess I'll have to go it alone!

@taramay..sometimes being alone is better than having someone there that makes you uncomfortable & will ruin your day ...maybe you will run into a new friend while you are at the mall...good luck & don't be afraid to say "hello" to someone new ...you could make their day a little brighter ..... 4951

the 1st step is to smile & then say Hi or hello ...after that conversation will come easy especially if you both have kids .....you can ask questions about your kids &  then ask what she does  with her kids , invite her to meet you at the mall play area again ....it's gets easier after the 1st time ...just remember ...a stranger is a friend you just have not met yet .......and a smile opens the door ..good luck ! 4951

Humble First Baptist Church has a large indoor play area that you can register on their site to use on Friday mornings. It's really nice and has an area for toddlers.  4951

i don't get it...a 1 year old has the attention span of a hamster. just my opinion, but i think you'd be better off to have a couple friends with a kid the same age and alternate houses for a session of kidplay in the yard (things like a toddlers pool about 10 bucks at wallyworld) while the moms talk and watch the kids... 4951

Kids in action has great stuff for young kids. When mine were little I'd pay $5 and they would have them play and do games for an hour! My kids loved it. I miss those days! 4951

I agree,, a child at that age, is learning and her attention span is very short.I think you are making this into something bigger than it is. A one year old will be happy doing anything. You dont need to go out of your way just to make the kid happy and do something. That will be in the future,, trust me. If you try to always make her happy and take her places everyday,, you will regret it later because she will demand it. Teach her to clean up after herself and make it a game,,, maybe she can earn a treat like a walk to a store, for icecream.Get her a variety of toys or things to do around the house or in the yard. If you have a sun problem, put on sun block or even get a tarp and tie it to some trees and your house, to make shade. Have a few dvd available. They key is to have your everday life chores, turned into a game for her. OR if you really want to keep her busy..buy her a puppy 4951

@KTownTexican:

Not trying to simply make the kid happy. I don't have friends here with kids her age. The one friend here with a daughter her age has flaked out on me a bunch lately. So I was looking for ideas on where else I could take my daughter to interact with kids her age.

Just wanting to have ideas of safe places for her to run around and get out of the house. 4951

Dwight d. Eisenhower park is nice. The playground has a cover over it to keep the sun out. There's bathrooms right there and picnic tables. 4951

@taramay: When my dd was that age, I didn't have any friends with kids her age.  I still don't. Gymboree had open gym days where you paid $5.00 for you and your child to play.  Maybe The Gym or Little Gym has something similar?  She loved field trips to the grocery store. Whole Foods was right down the street and I would take her there once a week.  Now that she is older, I take her to the park and plan on taking her to the pool.

@taramay another thing, I understand where your coming from. Your stuck in the house with the little one just wanting to get out! When my boys were small I'd take them to target and just cruise around haha. I'd let them run around the toy aisles . It got us out of the house. 4951
