I am in the market for a breast pump. Not sure what brand. I've been reading reviews.There is one in the classifieds:https://www.kingwood.com/classifieds/view_details.php?classified_listing_id=254379&back_link=%2Fclassifieds%2Fview_classified_category.php%3Fpage%3D%26classifieds_category_id%3D11It says used for one week. But used is used, right? I know things can be sterilized, but...I've been told I could "borrow" one from the hospital or my doctor's office too. It just seems like one of those things you would want new.Thoughts? 4951

As long as you get a closed system, like the madela, you're fine buying gently used. The tubes, flanges, etc can be replaced.

I believe most insurances cover the cost of a new pump now. Check with your insurance and see.

I bought a madela pump in style advanced when I was expecting. I used it for a couple months while I was working after she was born. But when I was home I never used it. I had a madela hand pump that worked just as well. I wasn't pumping regularly, so it was all I needed. 4951

Back in the day, I rented one from a local breast feeding support group. You can get a list from either the hospital or your doctor.I would NOT buy one or trust one from a classified ad. This is something that you would want to come from either someone you know or trust, not a stranger.   4951

Merry Go Round has a lactation specialist that is really awesome. She helped me in the early days. It was super helpful. She also made sure I was using the right sized flanges for my pump. 4951

My friend gave me her Mandela. I need to get new tubing for it. I am going to take it over to Merry Go Round and make sure it is in working order and can be sterilized etc. I heard they have a lot of info over there. I have heard that insurance will cover the cost of them now. If that's the case then you may just want a new one. 4951

Thanks for all the feedback, ladies. I had another friend tell me about the lady at Merry Go Round, so I need to go see her.@taramay: Maybe I should just go with a simple hand pump since I plan to stay home. I don't anticipate needing to pump often. 4951

It's a closed system. No germs or cooties are exchanged. 4951

@MAHM:

It may be worth starting with a hand pump. I found it a heck of a lot easier to use. Especially at night. She slept in our room for entirely too long. Haha! The noise of the electric pump would wake her up. I could use the hand pump quietly and had less parts to clean. I believe the madela hand pump was $40. BabiesRUs puts out 20% off coupons. Check the fine print to make sure you can use it on breast pumps. Sometimes they're excluded. 4951

Check with your insurance and see.

@taramay: This - when I had #3, I had a pump already but I called insurance and they did provide a new one (with a script from the OB, of course). I turned around and sold it. I know, I know - I went to confession over that one. (Not.)

@ctl74: Thank you. I will definitely check with my insurance company.

Also...The lady at Marry Go Round was a life saver! However, I found her to be a little extreme for me. She had me really freaked out about my daughter. She said she needed her tongue clipped. And gave me this huge long list of mouth exercises to do with my then newborn. It had me so freaked out that there was something wrong with my kid. After a visit with our pediatrician, I was reassured that she was fine and didn't need to have anything clipped.

Like I said, she was a total life saver and it's only because of her that I was able to nurse for over a year. But I wanted to just put it out there that while she is an expert at what she does, you still have to use your best judgment to decide what's best for you and your family. 4951

Thanks for the heads up. I've known some extreme people too. My best friend's husband took custody of his oldest daughter at birth. The birth mom had no interest in keeping her or being involved in any way. His sister is an extreme breastfeeding advocate and tried to convince him to run tubes to his nipples with the formula, to give the baby the feeling of breastfeeding so that she would bond. She also said that a man could lactate if he pumps enough. Cuh-razy!!He was like, "Uh, thanks for the tip, but I think I'm just going to bottle feed." 4951

Closed system should be fine to buy used.  As @taramay said, you can buy new tubes, flanges etc.  You are basically just buying the "pump".  I have the Medela pump in style and it worked wonderfully.  It's been through two others friends and my two kiddos and is still working like a charm.

I had one I would keep at home, and a pump I kept at work.  That way, I only had to cart the bottles bake and forth.  Made it much easier on me because I went back to work full time at 12 weeks. 4951
