the only real change contemplated recently was to DECREASE the class time. one proposal was to have the entire class time to be a total of 4 hours. the knowledge that some people could legally carry a loaded weapon after only 4 hours of instruction did not fill me with confidence but it did boost the stock of service corporation international by a number of points
@ProblemAgain: That law was being discussed when I was taking the CHL class. It subsequently passed. You are now only required to take a 4 hour class to get a CHL and a two hour refresher class to renew it. In my class, there were two people that had never shot their handguns and found that they could not even rack the slide to load it. If I had been in charge, I would have rejected their shooting qualification until they could either operate their gun, or find a gun that they could operate.PLEASE NOTE FOR THOSE CONSIDERING A CHL: The CHL class does NOT teach anything about properly handling a firearm or being able to shoot it. You must learn those things before attending the class. The class covers the laws regarding having a CHL and when it's appropriate to use a handgun in self-defense. During the class, you will be required to shoot 50 rounds at various distances and within various times. You must score a minimum number of points to pass. Therefore, you must familiarize yourself with your weapon and learn to shoot it BEFORE attending the class. If anyone is interested, I will be happy to teach you basic firearm handling/safety. Then we can go to the range so you can actually practice shooting your handgun. PM me if interested. I don't charge anything, but you pay the range fee.
