Anybody looking to get theirs soon?  Someone just reminded me that I better do it soon before it's too late. 4951

the only real change contemplated recently was to DECREASE the class time. one proposal was to have the entire class time to be a total of 4 hours. the knowledge that some people could legally carry a loaded weapon after only 4 hours of instruction did not fill me with confidence but it did boost the stock of service corporation international by a number of points 4951

@ProblemAgain:  That law was being discussed when I was taking the CHL class.  It subsequently passed.  You are now only required to take a 4 hour class to get a CHL and a two hour refresher class to renew it.  In my class, there were two people that had never shot their handguns and found that they could not even rack the slide to load it.  If I had been in charge, I would have rejected their shooting qualification until they could either operate their gun, or find a gun that they could operate.PLEASE NOTE FOR THOSE CONSIDERING A CHL:  The CHL class does NOT teach anything about properly handling a firearm or being able to shoot it.  You must learn those things before attending the class.  The class covers the laws regarding having a CHL and when it's appropriate to use a handgun in self-defense.  During the class, you will be required to shoot 50 rounds at various distances and within various times.  You must score a minimum number of points to pass.  Therefore, you must familiarize yourself with your weapon and learn to shoot it BEFORE attending the class. If anyone is interested, I will be happy to teach you basic firearm handling/safety.  Then we can go to the range so you can actually practice shooting your handgun.  PM me if interested.  I don't charge anything, but you pay the range fee.

I want to have a CHL at some point but definitely have to get more familiar with my gun. I shot it once at an indoor range and I must admit, the sound scared the **** out of me. I grew up shooting hunting rifles, not handguns. 4951

@MTechnique:  One young lady had bought a compact .45 that she had not yet shot.  She didn't have the finger strength to load the magazine or rack the slide.  The instructor had someone load and rack for her.  When she shot, I was afraid she was going to hit herself in the face with the recoil.  I ha to continously remind one person to keep their finger off of the trigger until ready to shoot.Unfortunately, there are many CHL holders that should not carry a weapon until they have practiced gun safety and shooting more.

@mogopups: Not sure if you're concerned about something, but CHL is not changing much the class is now shorter. As @Retired_Engineer said, a CHL class is not about learning to handle firearms and learning to shoot... that is a pre-requisite. The class is to go over the CHL laws and showing proficiency with a firearm. But do it! Now is better than later!

I've had my license for 17 years.  Just renewed my license, which was very easy.  Everything was done on line, and I did not need to get new photos or fingerprints. 4951

A friend suggested taking a discounted CHL class from an instructor who requires no range time. He trusts that all of his students either have or will practice using their firearm and passes them based on their word. I won't say who or where, because I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but WOW! 4951

@MAHM: WOW whoever he is should not be qualified to train.   That is really bad and I bet at some point it will come back to bite him in the butt!!!  One of his students will get shoot themselves or have some type of accident and it will come out that he cut corners..
