The 3 Part / Nightly Series "The World Wars" started last night at 8 on The History Channel.........And for all of my history peeps, it did NOT disappoint.........I learned quite a few things that I had absolutely NO knowledge of, nor had I ever heard before......Such as, that during WWI, Hitler, who was wounded, was literally in the sights of a British Infantry Man with a rifle at close range....  The Brit decided to lower his weapon and allow Hitler to live and escape........Just image how that one man could have changed history itself had he simply pulled the trigger....  ....Besides Hitler, it also went on to include the early rise of Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, President
Franklin D. Roosevelt, Italian Dictator Benito Mussolini, British Prime
Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. Gens. Douglas MacArthur and George
Patton....Part II comes on tonight at 8.........And the conclusion is Wednesday at 7:30......  4951

Sort of on topic...My grandmother recently passed away in Chicago. She was a good woman, who lived to her mid nineties. I was one of 36 kids, grandkids and great grandkids who went to her funeral, among a couple hundred others. When we were going through some of her things, we found she had saved about 20 different editions of newspapers from the beginning and end of WW2, for 70+ years...stored in her closet, in perfect condition.  My grandfather was in World War II, and she was a newly wed in her early twenties at the time.  They're probably not worth a lot, but it's amazing reading through actual newspapers from that time, describing war developments as they were happening. Here's one photo I took...And getting way off topic now, I also found she had saved a pretty cool photo of a very small Joe with her in New York, with the Twin Towers in the background... ; )Miss you, grandma! 4951

WWII fascinates me. When you learn about it in school, it doesn't do the whole horrible thing any justice. Went on for YEARS - imagine reading the paper month after month, Germany keeps taking more and more places. London being bombed relentlessly, Nazi's seem to be unstoppable, then Italy and Japan join in. Had to be terrifying. 4951

It's amazing the differences between our wars now and wars like WWII.  In WWII nearly the whole country was affected one way or another.  There was rationing of gas, sugar, meat, and butter just to name a few.  Since a large number of men were drafted and sent overseas to fight, women took over many factoring jobs, particular those directly involved the war effort like the manufacture of military aircraft. In this day and age we are hypersensitive regarding our rights.  That's not to say we shouldn't be.  But during WWII President Franklin Roosevelt signed an Executive Order to detain Japanese Americans in what amounted to was concentration camps.  Since we were at war with Japan, there were widespread fears that the Japanese had spies in America and we couldn't tell the loyal Americans of Japanese decent from those that meant us harm.  Of course the detainees were treated quite differently than Jews were in Germany.  However can you imagine such a thing happening in our time?In the modern era when the U.S. is involved in war it's more of an abstract concept to most Americans.  Yes we are aware of it but unless there is a family member or friend involved many of us don't think about it.  There's no rationing going on, no threat of the wider conflict being brought to our shores (outside of terrorism), and there is no draft.  So there isn't that since of shared sacrifice that our nation experienced in wars of yesteryear. 4951
