I am amazed!! I was expecting a fight on my hands but they reduced it down to within $1,000.00 of what I thought it should be. 4951

Yep if you get the right papers and just take them in you can fight it no prob.  We have to fight it almost every other year.  never have hired someone to do it! That to me is a waste of money.  If you save 500 in yearly taxes but pay an attorney 500 to save it then what do you save?  NOTHING 4951

@okiedokie - what neighborhood do you live in? Was your home valued at more than they are selling for in your neighborhood? 4951

I'm not sure what the deal was this year.  The valuations are completely out of whack.Case of incompetent appraiser?  Sure as heck wasn't based on market value.  At least mine wasn't.I still think there should be a law that if they claim your home is worth a certain amount and then you sell it for less, they pay back the difference in taxes.  Right now, it appears they have no constraints placed on them to jack up the values to whatever the hell they want. 4951

@jls2: I live outside of Kingwood in Montgomery county.  They have an online application now.  The reasoning was the grand parkway was raising values.  They tried to raise our value by more than 50,000.  I found a home 1/2 mile away that was selling for way less.

@Odin:  Talked to a few people about that, a couple of the real estate people.  part of the reason for my area anyways (Oakhurst and such) is because of the amusement park going in up the road and the Exxon campus that is going up in the Woodlands, it makes our properties more desirable.   They told me hosues around here are staying ont he market less than two weeks in most cases.  Hopefully everyone can get them lowered, that would be nice. 4951

@JW72: I think it's fair to say that the values WILL be going up in the future.  But they aren't there yet and not likely to reach the levels they are claiming.  I would sell my house immediately for the price they are saying it's worth.  But it's ludicrous.
My home was valued higher than other houses on the same street with pools and more square footage.  I'm not sure what the heck is up with that.  Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm going to protest or not.  For this year the taxable valuation is limited by 10% and I'm ok with that (probably a fair increase).  I may just wait until next year if I'm still in the house (doubtful). 4951
