It's a great concept, but not very practical.  There are about 48,000 miles of Interstates and 2.6 million miles of paved roads in the US.I anticipate it will be cost prohibitive on a wide-scale basis.  However, putting them in parking lots and driveways could allow people to recharge electric vehicles when they are parked.Many of the other benefits stated are pipe dreams.  However, this is a creative idea and I hope they pursue practical applications! 4951

@Retired_Engineer: I agree, plus I just dont see then standing up to all the abuse the roads get. and what would the cost be to replace a broken cell? and how long do they last?
 
could you imagine some jackhole pulling one of these on a glass roadway

 
@mm4731: Even without the nuts like in that video, we've all seen what heavy 18-wheelers do to a good concrete road like an interstate.  Besides, solar roads would still need a good concrete foundation, plus all of the wiring involved.  I also wonder how well the system is sealed...  particularly against floods.
